Time and again, we have had instances about what a great family man Anil Kapoor is! From being there for his family, making the most of the time at his daughter, Sonam Kapoor’s wedding, power-packed film performances, choice of roles and expressing his love for his wife, Sunita Kapoor, time and again, we can give you a zillion reasons to fall in love with this man all over again!
Speaking about his impeccable film performances, one such film which has managed to mesmerise the worldwide audience is none other than, 2009-release, Slumdog Millionaire. Anil had played the role of a quiz show host in the film and it was one of the most widely talked about films in the history of cinema. Having bagged as many as 10 nominations at the 81st Academy Awards, the film took away 8 trophies! However, a day before the Oscars, Anil Kapoor’s wife, Sunita Kapoor had scolded him for a reason they thought was more important than one of the most prestigious awards of the world. Wonder what was it? It was none other than their family!
In an interview with PTI, the Ram Lakhan star was quoted as saying, “For family, Oscar doesn't matter. My wife and I were discussing Sonam (daughter) the night before Oscar! I said 'let me sleep now' and she said 'leave Oscar, listen to me first.' So even then, family was my priority. I got a lot of firing from Sunita the night before Oscar ceremony.” That is what we call, a dutiful family! It must not be unknown to you what a responsible father that Anil Kapoor is. In an interview with HT in 2016, he had stated that no matter what, he will always be there for his kids and family, “Of course. I am there for all my kids — Rhea, Sonam and Harsh — whenever they need me. I am just a phone call away. That’s my priority, and has been for quite a few years. In fact, I had initially said no to the new show, because I had to complete 24, and Harsh’s film was going to be released. So, I wrote to my director, and said, ‘I have to let it go’. So, I had said no to the biggest opportunity of my life. But they were kind enough to change the schedule. A few of my close friends told me, ‘We would have rushed through 24 episodes and Harsh’s film would have released anyway’. But I said, ‘You can do that; I can’t’. Family is my top priority.”
Speaking about the cutesy couple, on Humans of Bombay’s Instagram page, Anil Kapoor and Sunita’s love story was featured. Introspecting how it all began with a prank call, Anil Kapoor had shared, “A friend of mine gave Sunita my number to prank call me––that’s when I first spoke to her and fell in love with her voice! Soon after, we met at a party––there was just something about her. We started talking and became friends. We used to discuss this other girl I liked - you know, if I like her or she likes me? Then suddenly that girl vanished, leaving me heartbroken – our friendship strengthened because of that! Little did I know that Sunita was the one all along – we started dating organically. It’s not like in the movies––I didn’t ask her to be my girlfriend––we both just knew.”
Speaking about his struggling days and how Sunita Kapoor stood by him, the ‘Jhakasss man’ of Bollywood further revealed, “She was from a liberal family––a banker’s daughter with a modelling career and I was bekaar! She didn’t care who I was or what my profession is - none of it mattered! I lived in Chembur and she lived on Nepeansea road – it took me an hour to reach by bus. She would start screaming, ‘No come fast by cab!’ and I’d say ‘Arrey I don’t have money’ then she’d say ‘Just come na’ and pay for my cab! We dated for 10 years––we travelled and grew together. She was always clear that she won’t enter the kitchen. If I said ‘cook’ I’d get a kick! I knew I needed to become something before asking her to marry me. I went through the struggle of not getting work, but she supported me unconditionally.”
It has been almost 45 years of togetherness for Anil and Sunita. Speaking about the same, he had shared, “Honestly, she knows me better than I know me. We’ve built our life; our home together. We’ve raised 3 kids and been through ups and downs. But I feel like we’re finally dating now – romantic walks and dinners have just begun! We’ve been together 45 years––45 years of friendship, love and companionship. They don’t make people like her anymore. She’s the perfect mother, perfect wife and the reason I wake up every morning, motivated. You know why?
