When Dilip Kumar Spoke About Not Having A Child With Wife, Saira Banu To Carry His Legacy Forward

Dilip Kumar and Saira Banu’s love story is the epitome of true love. Saira Banu was amongst one of the million fans of Dilip Kumar but her devotion and love for him started the journey of their happy life. Saira was just 12 when she had fallen madly in love with Dilip saab and despite the age gap of 22 years, the two got married on October 11, 1966.  

Dilip Kumar and Saira Banu’s married life had faced a setback when after 5 years of married life, she had suffered a miscarriage in her eighth month. Dilip saab and Saira Banu’s child was strangulated by the umbilical cord due to high blood pressure and the doctors could not save the baby. The doctors had also announced that Saira won't be able to conceive again after her miscarriage, leaving the couple without a child. Dilip Kumar and Saira Banu had happily accepted this fact.

In a 2012 interview with the Hindustan Times, Dilip Kumar had shared that he has no regrets about not having a child. Sharing that having a child would have been great, but he doesn’t regret it, he had said, "It would have been great if we had our own kids. But we have no regrets. We are both submissive to the will of God. As for incompleteness, I must tell you that neither Saira nor I can complain of a lack of contentment. It is enough for us that we have our families to share our happiness and our small dismays with.”

Dilip Kumar had further added that they are happy with their families, nieces and nephews. He had added, “Mine is a large family, with so many nieces and nephews and their families of growing kids speaking the language of today, which is as bewildering as it is befitting the times they are living in. Saira’s is a small family comprising her brother Sultan and his kids and grandchildren. We feel we are lucky to be there for them when they need us."

When Dilip Kumar was asked, who will carry forward his legacy, he had said, "I already see so many actors eager to carry forward what I established in my time. When a bright young actor comes up to me and says, ‘Sir, I wish to follow your work and walk the path you paved for us with your foresight,’ I am filled with a sense of awe and gratitude to the Almighty for having taken me through the paces of finding my way in a profession I had no preparation to be in."

Coming back to their love story, it was Saira Banu’s mother, actress, Nassem Banu, who had played Cupid between Dilip saab and Saira. She had introduced them to each other, bringing them closer. After falling in love with Saira, Dilip saab had proposed to her and without a second thought, she had agreed. Saira Banu was 22, when she had tied the knot with a 44-year-old Dilip Kumar.

Dilip Kumar and Saira Banu were married for almost 55 years, until he breathed his last on July 7, 2021.
