Everyone gets into the Bollywood industry to become a hero, however, there are a few, who made their strong impression on the audience as villains. Pran, Prem Chopra, Gulshan Grover, Amrish Puri come to our mind when we talk about villains of Bollywood. However, there was one more actor, who had startled the audience with his villainous characters in 400 odd films, and he was none-other-than, Amrish Puri’s brother, Madan Puri. Madan Puri had started off his career as a leading actor in a few films, however, with time, he had gotten the much-deserved fame through the films that he had done as a villain. He was born in 1915, with a forever dream of becoming a Hindi film hero. It was in 1943 when he had come to Bombay to make it big in the films. After 3 years of struggle, Madan ji had gotten his big break in the film, Ahinsa (1946). At the age of 69, in 1985, Madan ji had passed away after suffering a heart attack, leaving a story behind that still needs to be heard by millions.
Madan ji is best remembered for the portrayal of strong and powerful villains in Hindi films as he had established himself as a versatile actor. However, this time, we have brought a part of his personal life for you, which is not yet discovered by many. Scrolling through our IG feed, we stumbled upon an unseen picture of Madan ji from his son’s wedding ceremony. Madan ji can be seen smiling as the late veteran actress, Meena Kumari blessed his son and daughter-in-law on their wedding. We can also see his brother, Amrish Puri standing behind him and smiling. Madan Puri’s second son, Kamlesh Puri has written a biography on his late father, titled, My Father The Villain. When in a conversation with SBS Hindi, he was asked about his inspiration behind writing the book, he had said, “We always thought of our father, Madan puri as a mid-level film actor who went to work in the morning and came home in the evening like an office goer. There was no glamor or loud dressing. Just a white shirt and light coloured trousers. He had a diary as his secretary.” Recalling that it was on the date of his father’s death that his family had realised about the late actor’s popularity, he had said, “He passed away on January 13, 1985 after a long bout with cancer. We were surprised at to see the large attendance of film personalities like Ashok Kumar, Raj Kapoor and the entire Kapoor khandan from Shami to Rishi and their wives, the Chopras, the Mehras, the Anands and others at his funeral. Most studios closed for a couple of hours so that actors and staff could attend his funeral. I then realised that our father was a popular man in his film community. He had further narrated how his kids recognised their grandfather while watching him on-screen and that was the moment he had decided to pen some anecdotes of his life. He had said, “Two decades later I was watching a movie with my grandchildren and I pointed out that the person on the screen was my father and their great grandfather. It did not connect. I was hurt that his own had forgotten a great family man and popular film actor. I decided to record some anecdotes of his life for posterity.
