July 3, 2020, was one of saddest days in the history of Indian cinema as Bollywood had woken up to the news of the great choreographer, lovingly called masterji by many, leaving for the heavenly abode. Saroj Khan had taken her last breath at 1:52 am in Mumbai. Bollywood had never known as dedicated and talented a choreographer like Saroj Khan, and today, when she's not with us, the whole industry is mourning the irreparable loss that Bollywood has suffered! Masterji had breathed her last at the age of 72 in Mumbai. As per the reports, she had succumbed to cardiac arrest at 1:52 am on July 3, 2020. She was admitted to the city's Guru Nanak hospital on June 20, 2020, after complaining of breathing issues. According to reports, she had severe diabetes. She has left behind her son, Hamid Khan and daughters, Hina Khan and Sukania Khan. Now, in an interview with Pinkvilla, Saroj Khan's youngest daughter, Sukaina talked about how brave her mother was and her beautiful relationship with her. Scroll down to know more!
In a conversation with Pinkvilla, Saroj Khan's youngest child, Sukaina Khan remembered her mother fondly and said, "My mother was my hero. She was the greatest influence in my life. She was both a mother and father to me. She was very lenient but at the same time, wanted my etiquette to be perfect. She loved me being around her since I'm the youngest. My mum was my fighter. From the age of 13 to 71, she has done everything to fend for us and give us a full life. She has never complained and was the man of the house."
She also spoke about the beautiful bond she shared with her mother and said, "Every woman would agree with me that raising children alone is a very difficult job. And when you have a few other family members depending on you, it becomes all the more difficult. She never had a frown on her face. She was always like, 'Main hoon na. Ho jayega'. She never had a no for any problem and didn't disappoint anyone saying, 'Main nahi kar sakti'. My mother has always backed us up". Sukaina further elaborated on how her mother's health had deteriorated suddenly. She said that Saroj had complained of breathlessness on June 20. She was tested negative for COVID-19 but was put on oxygen. In Sukaina's words, "But suddenly two to three days ago, she suddenly had a huge spike in her diabetes, which went up to 600-650 on the scale. Last night, we were called when she was sleeping and at 1.52 am today, she had a cardiac arrest. We tried reviving her till 2 o'clock but she didn't respond."
Saroj Khan was laid to rest at Malad Marve Kabrastan. Only a few members of her family were allowed at the burial because of the obligatory norms of social distancing. Later, her family had announced on social media that they won't be organising a prayer meet for the legend as of now, due to the current COVID-19 situation in the city. Saroj Khan's mortal remains were taken to the Awais-e-Qarni Muslim Kabristan in Malad for burial, early morning. Saroj Khan's favourite muse, the dancing diva of Bollywood, Madhuri Dixit was deeply saddened by her masterji's demise and had shared some iconic pictures of her on her IG handle with a heart-melting eulogy. She had remembered her experience to get mentored by the very best. Her note for her masterji could be read as "I'm devastated & at an utter loss of words today! Saroj ji was part of my journey since the beginning. She taught me a lot, not just about dance but so much more. There's a rush of memories in my head thinking of this big personal loss.
