When Shah Rukh Khan Was Told His Sister Won't Survive As She Battled Depression Post Parents' Demise

Death – one word, five letters. And it shakes the entire world of a person, who loses their loved one to death. More than anything, it is the loss of the parents that shatters the world of a person and the grief is traumatic, physically as well as mentally. It is the pain that is never healed, but we only learn to live with it over time. Life never remains the same after we lose our parents and everyone takes their own time and their own way to grieve. Shah Rukh Khan, in a throwback video, revealed how his way of grieving his parents’ death was different from his sister’s and the effect it had on their lives. Being the King Khan of Bollywood, Shah Rukh Khan, his wife, Gauri Khan and their kids, Aryan Khan, Suhana Khan and AbRam Khan are in the limelight and thanks to their social media handles, we often get glimpses of their personal life. But very rarely we get to see his sister, Shehnaz Lalarukh Khan, who stays with the Khan family at their residence in Mumbai. It was in 2019 when Shah Rukh and Gauri had hosted a Marvel-themed bash for AbRam on his sixth birthday and in one of the pictures that had surfaced on social media, Lalarukh’s appearance had delighted us to the core. It was a family picture with Shah Rukh, Gauri, Lalarukh, Aryan, Suhana and AbRam in the frame and it was indeed a sight to behold.

A video of Shah Rukh Khan’s throwback interview is going viral on social media, in which he had spoken about how he and his sister, Shehnaz Lalarukh Khan had coped with the demise of their parents. Recalling how his sister was shell-shocked when their father died and kept mum for two years, Shah Rukh had said, “She just looked, she didn't cry, she didn't say anything, she just fell and hit her head on the ground. For two years after that, she didn't cry, she didn't speak, she just kept looking into space. It just changed her world." Speaking of how his way to grieving was different from his sister’s, Shah Rukh had continued, “I somehow developed this sense of detachment and false bravado, which I show in public, a sense of humour and a lot of things which people think is very flamboyant and very Bollywood-like to cover up the sadness affecting my life and me becoming like my sister.”

Revealing how he was told by the doctors that his sister, Shehnaz Lalarukh Khan won’t survive as she battled depression and he had taken her to Switzerland where he was shooting for Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, for treatment, Shah Rukh Khan had recalled, “She got some deficiencies. During the making of my film Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, she was again hospitalised and they said she will not survive. I took her to Switzerland, got her treated there while I was shooting Tujhe Dekha Toh Yeh Jaana Sanam. But she hasn’t ever recovered from the loss of her father, the suddenness of him passing away. And then, it got compounded because my mother also expired 10 years later.” (Also Read: When Newly-Weds Shah Rukh Khan And Gauri Khan Had Posed With His Sister, Mrs Khan Flaunted Chooda)

Calling his sister, Shehnaz Lalarukh Khan a much better person than he can ever be and being grateful for her presence in his life, Shah Rukh Khan had concluded, “I am very glad that she is a part of our lives like this. But I don't have the guts to be so simple, hurt and disturbed. So, a part of me keeps on working round-the-clock, keeps on being happy despite the things which are said about me or make a joke about things that I do but still keep doing them because if I do not, I think I would be in the same state of potassium deficiency and depression. So, to avoid depression, I act.”

It was in March 2021 when Shah Rukh Khan had visited his parents, late Meer Taj Mohammed Khan and late Lateef Fatima Khan’s graves in Delhi. Wearing a white shirt and black pants with his head covered, Shah Rukh had offered prayers and paid his respects to his parents. Shah Rukh was 15 when his father passed away and 26 when he lost his mother. Once in an interview with Rani Mukerji, Shah Rukh had said, “The empty house without my parents used to come to bite us. The loneliness, pain and sadness of the loss of both my parents, could have been overwhelming enough to take over my life wholly.”

In a throwback interview with The Times Of India, Shah Rukh Khan had spoken about visiting his late parents’ graveyard in Delhi and the fond memories he has with Delhi. Revealing why Delhi can never go out of him, Shah Rukh had said, “Whenever I sit on a plane to come to Delhi, be it for a day or for a couple of hours, the one thought I have is that my mother and father are here. I go and visit them at the graveyard late in the night. People often tell me that I have become a Mumbaikar but I don’t know how to express but Delhi can never go out of me because my parents are here and that is the biggest memory for me.” (Also Read: Aryan Khan Playing Guitar Demands All Your 'Attention' As He'll Remind You Of Challa, Shah Rukh Khan)
