When Sridevi's Mother Asked Kamal Haasan To Marry Her Daughter, Here's Why He Declined The Offer

Indian actor, director, producer, and playback singer, Kamal Haasan is a popular name in Indian cinema. He has been reigning in the Tamil industry for decades now, and his legacy is unparalleled. Apart from his professional life, he has been a part of the headlines for his personal life as well. Kamal's personal life has been an open book, and his love life has been one of the most controversial ones in the world of glamour.

Kamal has worked with quite a few actresses of his time, but everyone has always been in awe of his dazzling on-screen chemistry with the late actress, Sridevi. Regarded as one of the most romantic on-screen pairs, the duo starred in a number of Tamil films like Guru, Varumayin Niram Sivappu, Vaazhve Maayam and Moondram Pirai. However, did you know that even Sridevi's mother once wanted the legendary actor, Kamal Haasan to tie the knot with her daughter? Yes! You read that right. After Sridevi's demise, Haasan himself revealed the truth behind the same in a note titled "The 28 Avatars of Sridevi" at a memorial service for her. Kamal Haasan mentioned that he and Sridevi were close friends, and the latter's mother frequently requested him to marry her daughter. However, the actor revealed that he would always decline the offer, as he considered Sridevi, a member of his family and he couldn't marry her. In his words:

“Her mother and I would often discuss Sridevi’s marriage options and she would joke with me that maybe I should marry her daughter. I would laugh and retort that if that happens, both Sri and I would drive each other so mad that I will have to send her back to her house the very next day!”

Kamal Haasan met Sridevi for the first time on the sets of the Tamil film, Moondru Mudichu in 1976 when the latter was barely 13 years old. Since the actress had just set foot in the film industry, Haasan used to practise with her as the film's assistant director. Soon, the two became good friends. Then, Kamal and Sridevi acted in many love scenes in their movies, leading their fans to believe that they were more than just co-stars. However, Haasan often tried to put an end to his dating rumours with Sridevi. In fact, Sridevi respected Kamal a lot and called him 'Sir' till her last breath.

Over the years, Kamal Haasan’s relationships have been the talk of the town and a hot topic among the gossipmongers. Despite many linkups, he got married to dancer, Vani Ganpathi and later, ended their marriage of 10 years to be with actress, Sarika. However, Kamal never believed in the institution of marriage, and talking about the same, in an interview with Pinkvilla, he had stated:

”I never believed in marriage. People marry because of peer pressure but I don’t subscribe to the ‘herd mentality’. I shouldn’t have married. I married for the convenience of my women. Vani wouldn’t live-in and I wasn’t strong enough to put my foot down. And the society was such that Sarika and I couldn’t book a hotel room together even after we had two daughters.”
