In an era where digital dating is more common than ever, love scams have become a growing menace. Wherever you look, there are stories of elaborate schemes, identity frauds, and whatnot. But what happens when one scammer manages to deceive not just a handful, but dozens of victims? Yes, a shocking love scam from China has taken the internet by storm, where a total of 36 men were conned to invest in real estate. The woman allegedly posed as the ‘perfect girlfriend’ and convinced each of the victims to purchase apartments, only to cut all ties after sealing the deal.
This incident occurred in Shenzhen, China when a woman identified as Liu Jia reportedly presented herself as a virtuous, family-oriented woman looking for a serious relationship. For her master plan, she targeted men who were working professionals in Shenzen, all in their 30s. She led each of her targets to believe that they had found ‘the one’.
After dating each man for about a month and leaving no stone unturned to make them fall head over heels in love with her, Liu would bring up marriage. However, she had one condition: they had to buy an apartment first. To make things more believable, she also offered to contribute 30,000 yuan (around Rs. 3.3 lakh) toward the down payment and directed them to purchase two residential complexes in Huizhou, approximately 90 km away from Shenzen.
As reported by the South China Morning Post, Liu’s vanishing act started just after the property transactions were completed. She suddenly became distant, refused to meet her partners, and eventually blocked them. Victims like Atao, who now struggle with hefty mortgage payments, claim to have discovered at least 36 men who fell for the same trap. One of her victims, Atao, shared how Liu struck him as a compassionate and family-oriented woman. He said:
“She left me an impression of being tender, virtuous, family-oriented and considerate. I thought she was a perfect girlfriend.”
Another victim, Wang, shared a similar experience with the woman and recalled that Liu would use the excuse of being busy to avoid meeting, and eventually delete his contact. In Wang’s words:
