Ira Khan is the daughter of Indian actor, Aamir Khan and film producer, Reena Datta. Ira has been extremely vocal about her mental health struggles and recently shared how her parents' divorce affected their lives as a family. Aamir and Reena got divorced in 2002 when Ira was only four years old.
Ira recently sat down with Pinkvilla for an interview. During this time, she candidly discussed how her parents reacted to her struggles. She also revealed how she dealt with their divorce and shared that both her parents were concerned when she opened up to them about her struggles.
Ira revealed that it wasn't just one conversation. Her parents were deeply concerned about her because she wanted to drop out of her educational institution. She shared that she was studying in the Netherlands at the time, so many decisions needed to be made. However, Aamir had raised her with the belief that mental health issues were nothing to be ashamed of. She shared:
"I don’t think I told my father that I was putting it on Instagram. When I told both my parents, they were worried. You don’t figure it out all at the same time. It’s not like I said one sentence, and it was over. There was concern because I was studying in the Netherlands and wanted to drop out, so there were a lot of decisions to be made. My dad has put this faith or belief in us that mental health issues are not shameful."
In the same conversation, Ira Khan mentioned that while Aamir Khan and Reena Datta never openly blamed themselves for her mental health struggles, she still felt they might be blaming themselves. Recalling the time when she started medication, she shared that both her parents were exceedingly worried about her. She said:
"I started my medication when I came home in 2018. During that time, I could tell that both of them were extremely worried because they were going on their own fears and tangents. And I was like, 'I am the child, I need help right now, we can deal with your fears later'. They never said that or openly blamed themselves, but I am sure they felt those things. Even though they know that it’s not in their control, it’s a culmination of many things. I hope they don’t blame themselves."
Ira Khan was further asked how her parents, Aamir Khan and Renna Datta's divorce affected her. She responded by sharing that it changed their lives. She added that it wasn't just one day, and many good and bad things have happened since then that they might not even be aware of. Ira also revealed that she had to move out of her house after the divorce. She shared that although they had moved when she was four, they still remained relatively close by. However, with Aamir's work requirements and travels, she added that she is not sure how much it changed the dynamics. Ira shared:

"We moved out of the house after the divorce. I was 4 when we moved out, but we lived very close by, just like 50 metres away. My dad’s job involves a lot of travelling, so it’s a little hard to say if shifting houses affected the dynamic. I am sure it did. But it was fine! My grandmom also lived in the same building, so we were always around there."
