Achyut Potdar, a veteran of Indian cinema and television, passed away on August 18, 2025, in Thane at the age of 91. He was known for his impactful character roles and had acted in over 125 Hindi and Marathi films. While the exact cause of his death still remains undisclosed, it is being reported that it was due to age-related complications. His funeral is set for August 19, 2025, in Thane.

Achyut Potdar became a household name for his role as a confused yet endearing professor in Rajkumar Hirani’s 3 Idiots. His dialogue, 'Kehna Kya Chahte Ho?' became one of the most loved moments of the movie and spawned countless memes and GIFs. His role was brief, but his performance was surely memorable, and in those few seconds, he perfectly captured the humorous disconnect between students and the academic system.

Achyut Potdar had a life of service before stardom

Born on August 22, 1934, in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, Achyut led a remarkable life with many different work roles before entering the world of cinema. He was a gold medallist in economics, and he first served as a professor, then joined the Indian Army and retired as a captain in 1967. He later worked with Indian Oil Corporation for over two decades, retiring in 1992.

Achyut Potdar entered the film industry at the age of 44, while it was a late start, it was surely a memorable one. Initially, he was pursuing acting as a hobby while still working at Indian Oil. He was never actively seeking roles, still he found his way into films through sheer talent and passion. He quickly became a go-to character actor, especially in Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s productions.

Achyut’s film career is filled with notable roles in critically acclaimed and commercially successful movies. He has played a part in movies like Aakrosh, Ardh Satya, Parinda, Tezaab, Dilwale, Hum Saath Saath Hain, Lage Raho Munna Bhai, Ferrari Ki Sawaari, and Dabangg 2. His adaptability and natural performances made him a favourite among directors and audiences alike.

Achyut Potdar’s TV Roles and Marathi cinema contributions

Apart from his Bollywood work, Achyut also had an extensive career in television and Marathi films. He appeared in over 100 serials, including Wagle Ki Duniya, Bharat Ki Khoj, Majha Hoshil Na, and Mrs Tendulkar. His contribution to Marathi entertainment was widely celebrated.

Achyut's role as ‘Appa’ in Majha Hoshil Na won him Zee Marathi’s Jeevan Gaurav Puraskar in 2021. In 2015, Achyut was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award by Sanand, a cultural group in Indore, for his contributions to the arts.
