Anurag Kashyap is one of the well-known filmmakers in Hindi film industry who often explores versatile themes in his films. Bollywood has suffered a significant setback with a string of big-budget flops in the last couple of years. Flop films incurred heavy losses to production houses and cinema hall owners. Also, it raised questions on whether it's right for certain celebrities to take high fees and use production money to fulfill their lavish demands. Anurag Kashyap who recently appeared on the YouTube channel of Humans of Cinema, shared his views on celebrity demands.
Anurag Kashyap has experienced working as a director, screenwriter, and producer in Bollywood. When he was asked about how the Hindi film industry was going through changes with rise of OTT platform and flops at box office, he criticised celebrity demands. He revealed that certain stars demand excessive money for participating in the project and go to absurd length to fulfill their lavish demands. However, OTT has brought several possibilities as well. He was quoted as saying:
“For example, I had never seen so many vanity vans on my set like I saw on Sacred Games. That’s how the culture got started. Then you can’t reverse that. Finally, those people started getting paid who were totally ignored, which is the technical crew… It’s fair, in a way. But a lot of extra things started coming in.”

Some big-budget films like Laal Singh Chaddha, Samrat Prithviraj, Adipurush, and Jayeshbhai Jordaar, among others, caused heavy losses to the producers. There has been a public discussion about their commercial failures, including the increase in budget costs. Anurag revealed that the money from a film's budget is not entirely spent on the film. He said:
“A lot of money that is spent doesn’t go into making the film. It goes into the paraphernalia, it goes into the entourage. You’re shooting in the middle of a jungle, but one car will be sent to the city three hours away specifically to get you that five-star burger you want.”
Before Anurag Kashyap, Farah Khan had shared details on celebrity demands. She recently appeared on the YouTube vlog of TV actor, Dipika Kakkar and her husband, Shoaib Ibrahim, where she recalled the simpler times when actors would be comfortable with makeshift arrangements. The Happy New Year director, revealed that some celebrities demand up to four vanity vans on set for them and their team. She was quoted as saying:
“Until the vans don’t come, they don’t act. Nowadays, each actor has about four vans for themselves. One person. One is for their gym, one is for their staff, one is for them, one is… then the food truck comes, that’s separate."
