Yesteryear actress, Asha Parekh, is one of the highest-paid actresses of her time. The flagbearer of women-oriented roles, Asha was the first female Chairperson of the Censor Board. She also produced offbeat and empowering serials like Kora Kagaz and Kangan. Apart from her tremendous professional life, Asha Parekh has often grabbed attention for her personal life.
The actress never got married, but her name was often linked to her co-actors. One such name was Shammi Kapoor. There was a time when rumours were rife about Asha’s marriage to Shammi. In her recent appearance in Arbaaz Khan’s show, The Invincibles Series season 2, Asha spoke about her marriage story with Shammi.

Talking about the same, the actress revealed that it was director, Om Prakash who started the rumour about her and Shammi. Elaborating on the same, she said:
“This is a long story. We were shooting in Mahabaleshwar and I don’t know what came upon Om Prakash ji, he declared that Shammi and I are married. Then there was a party at Mr Nasser Hussain’s place, people started whispering (about the marriage rumours). I said, ‘Yes, we are married.’ (Renowned journalist) Devyani Chaubal was also in the room. She heard the rumour.”
Going further in the interaction, Asha revealed that Shammi told her not to tell anyone anything and continued with the prank. However, his then-girlfriend got very upset after hearing about the rumours. In her words:
“He said, ‘Don’t tell anything.’ He was playing a prank (with everyone). At that time, he was having an affair with somebody. So that person got very upset.”

Born into a middle-class Gujarati household, Asha was inclined towards art, and her mother enrolled her in classical dance classes. Asha was just ten years old when she bagged her debut film. Asha was considered a lucky mascot for many actors, but her favourite co-star was Shammi Kapoor. In a throwback interview, she once shared her equation with Shammi Kapoor and shared that she would call him 'Shammi chacha'. He was the one who taught her to lip-sync and emote in the songs.
In an interview with Deccan Herald, Asha Parekh revealed that she had never seen Shammi depressed except when his wife, Geeta Bali, suddenly passed away. It had left him shattered. She had reminisced that with her, he was caring and protective.
