Diane Keaton's Hidden Health Battles, What She Told About Skin Cancer And Bulimia Before Her Passing

Diane Keaton’s demise at the age of 79 came as a shock to her near and dear ones. She was an acclaimed American actress, who rose to prominence with her role as 'Kay Adams-Corleone' in the film, The Godfather. However, the day turned gloomy on October 11, 2025, when Diane passed away, leaving behind her two children, Dexter and Duke. She was also a pet parent to her fury baby, Reggie. Although the real cause of death is yet to be revealed, the reason behind her sudden demise might have been her declining health. Years back, in 2015, she once talked about her health struggles.

Diane Keaton opened up about her skin cancer diagnosis at the age of 21

Earlier, in a 2015 interview with Los Angeles Times, Diane Keaton opened up about her skin cancer diagnosis at the age of 21. In fact, her signature hat style was not a fashion statement, but rather a protection from the sun. Diane shared that having skin cancer was in her family history. She mentioned her Aunt Martha, whose skin cancer turned so bad that she had to remove her nose. She added that her dad and brother had basal skin cancer. Diane also highlighted why it is important to use a sunblock. She was quoted as saying:

"It’s a family history. I remember my Auntie Martha had skin cancer so bad that she had to remove her nose. My father had basal skin cancer, and my brother had it. It’s tricky with this skin cancer. That’s why you’ve got to put the sunblock on."

In the same interview, Diane expressed how she had neglected sun care in her 20s. The Oscar-winning actress mentioned that she didn’t do any research and just didn’t care. However, it later bothered her adult life. She highlighted that in her 40s, she started using sun care. Years later, somewhere between late 2014 and early 2015, she was diagnosed with squamous cell cancer, for which she had to undergo two surgeries. In her words:

"Back in my 20s, I didn’t pay attention much. I didn’t research and didn’t really care, and that was stupid because it’s dogged me my entire adult life, even recently. I didn’t start sun care until my 40s."

Diane Keaton struggled with bulimia, an eating disorder

Earlier, on The Dr Oz Show, Diane spoke about her struggle with bulimia, an eating disorder. She shared her typical dinner at the time, when she was suffering from bulimia. The Godfather actress mentioned that after a person told her that she seemed to have some mental issues, she went to an analyst. She initially lied to her doctor about her excessive eating habit, but later surrendered herself. In her words:

"My typical dinner was a bucket of chicken, several orders of fries with blue cheese and ketchup, a couple of TV dinners, a quart of soda, pounds of candy, a whole cake and three banana cream pies. All I did was feed my hunger, and I am an addict. It's true. I'm an addict in recovery; I'll always be an addict. I have an addictive nature."
