Hollywood is mourning the loss of one of its most iconic stars, Diane Keaton, who passed away at the age of 79. The news was reported by People who revealed that the Oscar-winning actress’s family has requested privacy as they grieve the loss. No details have been released on the cause of death. Diane stole hearts over the years with her distinctive charm, timeless fashion, and unforgettable performances. She has now left behind a cinematic legacy that includes classics like Annie Hall, The Godfather trilogy, and Reds. However, apart from her career, fans have always been curious about her unconventional love life, and here is everything you need to know about it.
Throughout her impressive career, Diane Keaton was linked to several of Hollywood’s biggest names, including Al Pacino, Warren Beatty, and Woody Allen. Despite these high-profile romances, she never walked down the aisle. Her most famous relationship was with Al Pacino, her co-star from The Godfather, with whom she shared an on-and-off romance that began during the filming of The Godfather: Part II in 1974. However, they ultimately went their separate ways after Diane gave him the choice to marry or break up. Still, they remained close over the years, and Al had often expressed his admiration for her.
Diane had also dated actor, Warren Beatty during the filming of Reds in 1981. Shen often fondly spoke about him and called him “brilliant, complex, and charming.” Before that, she had a long-standing friendship and romantic connection with Woody Allen, her co-star from Annie Hall at the beginning of her career, and defended him against controversies. Later in the 2000s, she was rumored to have dated Keanu Reeves after they starred together in Something’s Gotta Give. Though neither confirmed the relationship, Keaton playfully told Oprah in 2006, “I’m going to marry him. He likes an older woman.” Yet after these rumored and real romances kept her in the headlines, she ultimately remained fiercely independent without a need to get married.
Regarding the family, Diane Keaton found great joy in motherhood. She never married, but adopted two children in her 50s: a daughter, Dexter, in 1996, and a son, Duke, in 2001, when they were one year old. She raised them as a single mother. Dexter is now married to racer, Jordan White and lives a private life, while Duke is passionate about music and photography. Keaton once shared her feelings on motherhood with Ladies’ Home Journal:
“Motherhood wasn’t an urge I couldn’t resist; it was more like a thought I’d been thinking for a long time. So I plunged in.”
Diane Keaton often reflected on her parents’ relationship. Speaking to Lisa Kudrow, she explained, “It goes back to my mother. I saw how much she gave up. She was the best mother, but I think she’s the reason why I didn’t get married. I didn’t want to give up my independence.” In the later years of her life, she admitted that she had not been on a date in decades, yet lived a full and fearless life on her own terms, redefining Hollywood.
