Dilip Doshi, Former Indian Left Arm Spinner Passes Away At 77 Due To A Cardiac Arrest

India's former, left-hand spinner, Dilip Doshi, passed away on June 23, 2025, at the age of 77. A report by the Hindustan Times shared that he passed away in London because of heart issues, where he resided for many years. Dilip, in his cricket tenure, had played 33 Tests along with 15 ODIs when he had a four-year-long career from 1979 and 1983. A cardiac arrest took away Dilip, who left behind his wife, Kalini and their son, Nayan.

Dilip Doshi was a classic left-arm spinner

Dilip was a versatile left-arm spinner who, in his 33 appearances, had taken 114 Test wickets. He had also taken up 22 wickets in 15 ODIs that also at an economy rate of 3.96. Dilip had also played for Saurashtra, Bengal, Warwickshire and Nottinghamshire, first-class cricket. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) also mourned the sad demise of the former India spinner, who unfortunately passed away in London. BCCI had taken to X to mourn the loss of Dilip and had written a rest in peace message.

For the unversed, Dilip was 32 when he made his Test debut and followed the footsteps of the four legendary Indian spinners back in the 1970s who had dominated the world of cricket. Dilip was no less than Bishan Sigh Bedi, Erapalli Prasanna, Bhagwat Chandrasekhar and Srinivas Venkatraghavan when it came to spinning. For the unversed, Bishan, Erapalli, Bhagwat and Srinivas were called 'India's spin quartet', and Dilip added a feather to the same.

Dilip Doshi exited cricket in the 1980s

Dilip reportedly was influenced a lot by Garfield Sobers, who had been a West Indies legend back at Nottinghamshire. Dilip had made a rapid and a silent exit from international cricket back in the 1980s, as he did not like the way Indian cricket was taking then. He had penned his honest opinions and wrote about his cricketing days in an autobiography titled, Spin Punch. A report also suggested by the publication that Dilip picked 114 Test wickets and 22 in ODIs.

He was known as a late bloomer and one of those cricketers who took 100 wickets after making his cricket debut at 30. It was in 1979 when Dilip had his Test debut, and he had impressive figures of 6/103 against the Australian team, which was a tough nut to crack back in 1979. India had a famous innings win. Dilip was then seen at the BCCI awards event and also at the World Test Championship finals at Lord's Cricket Ground.
