Dr Harleen Grewal has been making headlines online after a video of her making a controversial comment went viral. The Santa Clarita-based dentist made a joke at the political gala, which has now led to severe backlash. The dentist made light of patient discomfort, ridiculing complaints about dental costs and sharing a questionable method of managing patient anxiety. Not only did her remark raise concerns about her professionalism, but it has also led to a wave of negative reviews on her business pages, along with a legal conflict involving an unrelated dentist's office in Chicago.
Dr Harleen Grewal was making a speech at a SCV GOP Liberty Gala. Dr Grewal made several comments that have since drawn public attention. During her speech, she shared how some patients would react when they saw her office's decor, joking that they would "jump off and take off as if Trump was coming in the room." The dentist also addressed concerns about rising dental costs. She stated:
"How's Bidenomics working for you?"
However, the part that has social media ablaze came when she mentioned using "a secret hat" to manipulate her patients' experiences. According to Dr Grewal, she wears a 'make your smile great again' hat while performing procedures. She added that when patients begin to show signs of anxiety or discomfort, she reportedly reduces their laughing gas and encourages them with the words:
"You got this. It’s not as bad as you think it is."
Dr Harleen Grewal has now responded to the criticism. However, instead of withdrawing her comments, she stated that her remark was a part of a stand-up comedy-style routine and said, "Jimmy Kimmel can have a joke, but I can't?" she remarked in an interview, questioning why her humour was being singled out.
Dr Harleen Grewal's remark was not taken lightly by the netizens, who have now accused her of malpractice and unprofessional behaviour. Some critics expressed concern about the ethical implications of her behaviour, particularly regarding the alleged reduction of laughing gas without the patients' consent. Despite the backlash, Dr Grewal insisted that she adheres to the highest standards of care. She stated:

"I took an oath to be a good dentist and a good provider, which I am."
Nonetheless, the repercussions of her comments are being paid by her business, Skyline Smiles, which has been inundated with one-star reviews on platforms like Yelp. Before the video went viral, the reviews focused on complaints about overcharging and alleged unnecessary treatments. However, since the video went viral, the Yelp page was frozen due to the overwhelming number of negative comments. Nonetheless, Dr Harleen Grewal's practice is not the only one that has suffered; people have also confused her practice with an unrelated dentist's office in Chicago.
Skyline Smiles of Chicago has been in operation since 2013 and has faced the heat, as it shares the same name as Dr Harleen Grewal's clinic. Dr Deepak Neduvelil, who runs the Chicago-based Skyline Smiles, has expressed frustration over the situation. His office had trademarked the name years ago and had been in a legal battle with Dr Grewal to resolve the issue. However, Dr Grewal has refused to change the name of her practice, arguing that the two offices are in separate geographic areas and thus should not be confusing.
