Farida Jalal is known for her iconic roles in multiple movies. However, it is her simplicity and charm that always captivated her millions of fans. Recently, she was seen in the role of 'Qudsiya Begum' in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's directorial debut web series, Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar. She beautifully enacted the role of the grandmother of 'Nawab Tajdar Baloch', played by Taha Shah Badusha. Undoubtedly, her aura made her an instant sensation.
Coming to her years-long journey in the film industry, Farida Jalal faced a significant downfall in her career after 1980. Although she worked in a few films, some were short characters, and some were even uncredited. Thus, she took a break and made a comeback on the silver screens with her 1991 film, Henna. With this began the era in her career wherein she was only offered motherly roles. However, it is noteworthy that Farida was only in her 40s at that time. For instance, she played the role of a mother to Shah Rukh Khan in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, to Kajol in Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jaaenge, to Sridevi In Judaai and to Salman Khan in Chori Chori Chupke Chupke, among others.

Now, in an interview with India Today, Farida Jalal opened up about the same. She revealed that when she made her comeback with Henna, she played the role of Rishi Kapoor’s mother. For the unversed, Farida's performance as 'Bibi Gul' in Henna was so much appreciated that she even won the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress. Talking about the same, she said they used to laugh on sets when Farida got to play a mother on screen at such a young age. She added:
“It was offered to me. Henna, which was my comeback film after eight years, had Rishi Kapoor. I was opposite him in Bobby. I might have been older than him by two or five years, but I played his mother in Henna. We would be laughing about this on sets.”
Farida further added that when she was offered the role, another actor in the film, Raza Murad, had also quizzed her, saying that after her comeback, she could not even bag any sister roles. However, she had to work only in motherly roles. So, if she was okay with it. Answering the same, Farida shared:
“One thing Raza Murad told me on the sets of Henna was, ‘Faridaji, you are coming back after 8-9 years. So, don’t think now you will get any sister roles to do. Think of it as now you are going to be put into the mother or bhabhi kind of roles.’ I said, ‘of course,’ I just wanted to act. I am not disappointed at all.”

In the same conversation, Farida Jalal mentioned that when she was doing one such role as a mother alongside Anil Kapoor in the film, Laadla, he had an issue with the same. She mentioned that Anil often would ask to cut the shot. According to Anil, Farida was very young to play the role of his mother. Farida shared:
“When I was doing Laadla, Anil would stop the shot in between… he is such a sweetheart, he would say ‘mother wali feeling hi nahi aa rahi hai yaar’. He would cut the shot saying it was all going wrong, there was this song ‘Teri Ungli Pakad Kar Chala’, and he would ask to cut the shot and say, she is too young.”
