Florence Welch recently opened up about a traumatic loss she faced a few years ago. The singer, for the first time, opened up about the devastating ectopic pregnancy that almost cost her her life. The singer, in a conversation with The Guardian, revealed that she cancelled a handful of live shows because of it.
In 2023, Florence Welch announced that the band would not be performing a number of their scheduled European dates, yet did not give a detailed reason why. Now, the singer has opened up about the reason behind the cancellation, and it is absolutely heartbreaking. In a lengthy, heartfelt chat, the Florence and the Machine singer shared how she had been expecting her first child with her on-again, off-again musician boyfriend at the time.
Florence revealed that while it was a big shock for her at first, she eventually found it to be magical. However, things went south early in her pregnancy, she shared, "I had an ectopic pregnancy, on stage." Talking of her state of mind at the time, she stated:
"I think, because it was my first time being pregnant, and it was my first miscarriage, I was like, OK, I’ve heard this is part of it."
During the same conversation, she admitted how she felt 'devastated' when she lost the baby. Florence shared that she was in the elements, 'in the wind and rain', and she just felt something working through her. The singer also recalled how she visited the doctor when she started to bleed before a show and was admitted to the hospital. Reflecting on how she felt panicked. She stated:
"I felt this thing take over, the thing that’s always there, the safe space of performance. I had a Coke can’s worth of blood in my abdomen."
In the same conversation, Florence revealed that while she was admitted for emergency surgery within the hour, her fallopian tube could not be saved. Following her hospital admission, she was due to perform another show, yet she admitted, "If I'd got on that plane, I’d have come off on a stretcher. Or worse." Back in 2023, Florence had made a statement explaining that they had to cancel some shows. The statement could be read as:

"I'm so sorry that I had to cancel the last couple of shows. My feet are fine. I had to have emergency surgery for reasons I don't really feel strong enough to go into yet, but it saved my life. And I will be back to close out the Dance Fever tour in Lisbon and Malaga (maybe not jumping so much, but you can do that for me). Suffice to say, I wish the songs were less accurate in their predictions. But creativity is a way of coping, mythology is a way of making sense."
An ectopic pregnancy affects one in every 80-90 pregnancies. According to the NHS, it affects approximately 11,000 pregnancies each year in the US alone. It happens when a fertilised egg implants outside the womb. Fertilisation, when the sperm meets the egg, occurs in a fallopian tube, and the egg usually travels to the womb, where it implants. However, in an ectopic pregnancy, the fertilised egg attaches itself somewhere it cannot grow. Unfortunately, the pregnancy always has to be terminated. The egg will be removed in an operation or using medicine.
