The Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute in Manhattan has announced the theme for the 2025 gala, and we are more than excited. However, it is not just us fans and fashion enthusiasts; every year, even celebrities from all over the world wait with bated breath for the prestigious gala. Held on the first Monday of every May, the fashion-lovers eagerly look forward to it.

The MET Gala is a haute couture fundraising festival held for the benefit of the Metropolitan Museum. It is known to be one of the biggest star-studded fashion nights, with designers bringing out the best of their pieces to the red carpet. In the past years, several Indian celebrities have attended the event, including Deepika Padukone, Priyanka Chopra, Natasha Poonawalla, and Alia Bhatt. So, while we wait to see what's next, let's take a look at some of the most iconic attires won by Indian stars at the prestigious gala.

Alia Bhatt turned princess on the MET carpet for two years in a row

Alia Bhatt made her highly awaited MET Gala debut in 2023. While fans were not sure about what to expect from the actress' debut, she absolutely blew everyone's minds with her custom Prabal Gurung gown inspired by Karl Lagerfeld's bridal look for Chanel's 1992 fall/winter collection. The actress looked like a dream in her gorgeous cream-coloured gown with pearl detailing, and the edginess of the white fingerless glove added stars to her look. 

Alia Bhatt broke the internet once again with her appearance on the MET carpet in 2024. However, this time, our glam girl went all Indian princess with a custom mint-green saree by none other than one of the most loved Indian designers, Sabyasachi Mukherjee. The saree featured a 23-foot-long train, and floral details made with silk floss, glass beads, and semi-precious stones made her look exquisite.

Priyanka Chopra's commitment to couture

Who can forget Priyanka Chopra's trench coat from the 2017 MET Gala? Priyanka, who is known for her bold fashion choices, made a statement with the long train Ralph Lauren trench coat-inspired look for her MET debut. While the actress' look was planned to honour the theme: Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between, it ended up inspiring numerous memes on social media. Priyanka Chopra once again took us all by surprise during her appearance at the 2019 MET Gala. The actress' attire for the evening has to be the boldest look she has opted for. The Bajirao Mastani star wore a feathered gown by Christian Dior for the theme of: Celebrating Camp: Notes on Fashion. The grey tulle on the corseted gown reportedly had taken inspiration from the 'Mad Hatter' from Alice in Wonderland. The similarities were further evident in the pale colours, PeeCee's hairdo and her bold lip for the night. 

Deepika Padukone turned Pink-Cinderella for MET 2019

Deepika Padukone appeared on the Grand MET carpet thrice. However, it was her 2019 look that stole the hearts of every girl with a love for pink. The actress served us Barbiecore way before the internet was ready for it. She donned a gorgeous voluminous gown by Zac Posen for the theme Camp: Noted on Fashion. She further opted for an extravagant high ponytail and went for bold marsala lips, giving her the old-age 'Cinderella' look. Nonetheless, the strapless gown was a design masterpiece. It was constructed out of lurex jacquard and featured 400 pieces of three-dimensional embroidery.

Isha Ambani's garden of time saree by Rahul Mishra

We all saw Isha Ambani's pictures from the MET Gala in 2024 and most refused to believe that something so eloquent could be created. However, Rahul Mishra turned this daydream into a reality with his hand-embroidered couture saree gown. The design featured uncountable flowers, butterflies and dragonflies, placed with such precision that it left everyone mesmerised. The attire paid homage to the Indian craft techniques, including zardozi, nakshi, and dabka.

Natasha Poonawalla turned into the armoured queen

Natasha Poonawalla made headlines in 2022 for her armoured queen look for the MET Gala. The astronomical warrior princess made it to the list of the Best Dressed list for the event after she gave an Indian twist to the look with a Sabyasachi saree paired with a Schiaparelli gold corset. The billionaire paired her look with stacks of heavily bejewelled bangles and long dangly earrings. Her attire for the evening is still one of the most talked about looks at MET.

Suddha Reddy's exquisite saree by Tarun Tahiliani

Sudha Reddy turned up the heat with her tailored off-shoulder gown by the ace Indian designer Tarun Tahiliani. She wore an exquisite necklace from her personal collection at the MET 2024 Gala. For the unversed, the statement piece was valued in crores. Her gown featured intricate embroidery with delicate French knots, 3D butterflies, and couching. The piece remains one of the finest works of design crafted by a skilled team of 80 artisans over a period of 4500 man-hours.

Mona Patel's MET outfit came to life

We cannot talk about the iconic looks and not talk about Mona Patel's dreamy outfit from MET 2024. The darling diva wore a custom Iris Van Herpen couture. A dreamy nude floor-grazing sculpted gown with a butterfly-shaped corset and scalloped train that pays homage to the theme Garden of Time. However, the most enchanting feature of her attire remains the kinetic butterflies encircling her arms. And once the butterflies started fluttering in slow motion, it was the most magical moment on the MET carpet.

Mindy Kaling dazzles in the magic of Gaurav Gupta

Last but definitely not the least on our list is Mindy Kaling. The Indian decedent arrived at the MET Gala and won our hearts. She not only gave Gaurav Gupta's 'The Melting Flower of Time' the carpet it deserved but also owned it like a glamourous queen. The blush pink sculptural gown made a lasting impression on everyone who saw it. Making it the perfect choice for the theme of 'The Garden of Time'.
