Gordon Ramsay Opens Up About His 'Torrid Relationship' With Dad In Docuseries, 'I Sadly Had...'

Gordon Ramsay, the celebrity chef, is currently hogging the limelight for his newly released docuseries, Being Gordon Ramsay. For the unversed, the six-episode docuseries was released on February 18, 2026, on the OTT giant, Netflix. The series not only features his professional achievements, but also showcases Gordon’s personal life. He has been married to Tana Ramsay for nearly three decades. The couple shares six children. In the show, Gordon opened up about his torrid relationship with his father.

In the docuseries, Being Gordon Ramsay, the celebrity chef opened up about his torrid relationship with his father. Gordon revealed that his dad was an alcoholic. Gordon shared that his dad never supported his cooking career, as he thought it was only meant for women. He mentioned that his dad thought cooking wasn’t a man’s job and once called him a 'snob'. He was quoted as saying:

"I had to sit there, you know, at weekends and almost watch him ruin his life through alcohol. It's hard, when someone's an alcoholic, it's very hard to relate to that, because you're just ... you're nervous. He believed cooking was for women and it wasn’t a man’s job. My father called me a snob once. And I said, 'No, definitely not a snob. I just wanna get out of the s--- mess I was born in.' I sadly had a torrid relationship with my father."

When Gordon Ramsay shared that he never had a 'father figure'

In a 2023 cover story of People, Gordon shared that he didn’t grow up with a nice example of fatherhood. For the uninitiated, the celebrity chef was born in Johnstone, Scotland, and raised in Stratford-upon-Avon in the West Midlands of England. His mom, Helen, was a nurse, and his dad, Gordon Ramsay Sr. worked various jobs. He was also ab**ive towards his wife, Helen and his kids, including the celebrity chef and his three siblings. Gordon, who is a father to his six kids, mentioned that he never had a 'father figure'. The celebrity chef added that he wanted to be the exact opposite of his own dad, who was an alcoholic. He was quoted as saying:

"Growing up, I never had a father figure. Everything I was witnessing at the time was from an alcoholic father, so I knew I had to take the opposites."

Besides being a celebrity chef, Gordon is a restaurateur, television presenter, and writer. He founded his restaurant group, Gordon Ramsay Restaurants, in 1997. In February 2025, he launched his sky-high five-restaurant empire in London’s 22 Bishopsgate building. After the successful launch of this complex project, Gordon called it a dream-come-true moment. Speaking about the same, the celebrity chef told Marie Claire UK in February 2025:

Coming to his personal life, Gordon Ramsay is happily married to a former Montessori teacher and food editor, Tana Ramsay. The couple tied the knot in 1996. They first crossed paths at a New Year's Eve party when Tana was in her early 20s. It is noteworthy to mention that when the couple met for the first time, Tana was engaged to someone else. The couple has six kids, three boys and three girls.
