Grey's Anatomy Season 22 has been a haunting wait for the fans. They have been waiting to see if their favourite character survived the tragedy that was left behind in the Season 21 finale, and now it looks like one doctor lost their life to the massive explosion. Now, in an interview with Deadline, they have revealed how they were told about the death scene and what their thoughts are on the same.
Fans had been dreading that Grey's Anatomy Season 22 would bring the departure of 'Link'. However, lucky for 'Jo', it wasn't him but another surgeon who had only been a part of the show for two seasons. Yes! We are talking about 'Monica Beltran'. 'Monica', who was portrayed by Natalie Morales, passed away after being stuck on an OR wall. However, not before she guided 'Jules' through a surgery that saved a little boy's life.
During the conversation, Natalie revealed that she was not meant to return for Season 22. She shared that she had been approached by Meg Marinis for 3-5 episodes initially. When she got the call about the return, she was surprised, as she had imagined they would just write her character off. However, things changed as the hospital blew up, and the writers gave Natalie a creative out.
Natalie revealed that when Meg told her about how 'Monica' would die, she felt a mix of emotions. She admitted that she has been extremely lucky to be a part of the show. While she is sad about the end, she understands the creative process. She added:
"I think the fandom of this show has been so kind to me and so welcoming, and I think those people who have been welcoming to me are going to be pissed. I’m sorry about that. But I also think that Meg is an incredibly talented writer and showrunner, and truly one of the best people I’ve ever worked with. She was so kind and on top of everything all the time that when she told me the plan, I was like, 'Oh, that feels right.' I get why you’re doing that, and it makes sense to me."
When asked if Natalie was comfortable during the scene, she revealed that it wasn't as comfortable as one might think. She revealed that they did try to make her as comfortable as possible. However, it was not comfortable in any way. The actress was further asked how she approached the scene, and she shared that for her, it wasn't any different.

Natalie added that, like in any other scene in the show, there were medical professionals who helped them through every step of the 'operation'. She shared that the presence of the medical professionals made it even more interesting as she was constantly questioning them about why and how her character died. She was quoted as saying:
"So for me, it was really important to play it honestly from a medical perspective and be like, Well, what’s happening here? Why does she die? When does she start dying? How is she pinned to the wall, but then when she moves, that’s when she starts internally bleeding. How is that going to affect her? And how can we portray that so that on second watch, you can tell what happens, but on first watch, you don't really know when she's dying and what shifted."
In the same conversation, Natalie also reflected on how it was the first time she had died in a show, making it even more interesting for her. She revealed that the scene was shot from several different angles, which made it interesting for her to understand how they would portray her demise. Natalie was introduced as 'Monica' in Grey's Anatomy Season 20 as a brilliant pediatric surgeon. While her exit is heartbreaking, the actress is content with how her role came to an end.
