Hema Malini Talks About Dharmendra's Last Days, 'To Personally See Him Sink Was Very Difficult'

November 24, 2025, the nation lost one of its most magnetic stars as Dharmendra bid adieu to the world. His friends, family, and fans were left heartbroken with his demise and penned their condolences. Dharmendra wasn’t keeping well and was rushed to the hospital, and after a few days, he was brought back home. However, soon his health deteriorated, and he bid adieu to the world.

Hema Malini recalls Dharmendra’s final days

In a recent interview with The Times of India, Hema Malini spoke about Dharmendra’s final days and revealed that it was a difficult time for the whole family to process what was happening. In the same interaction, she also pointed out that Dharmendra’s kids were there together for him. Revealing how they thought it would again come back hale and hearty, Hema said:

“It was an inconsolable shock. It has been terrible because for a month we were struggling when he was not well. We were constantly trying to cope with whatever was happening in the hospital. We were all there - I, Esha, Ahana, Sunny, Bobby - all together. In the past, there had been instances when he went to the hospital and came back home fine. We thought iss baar bhi aa jayenge.”

Hema Malini revealed that Dharmendra was talking to everyone till the last moment

In the same interaction, Hema revealed that Dharmendra was present till the last moment and even wished her on her birthday. Revealing why his loss was difficult to accept, Hema continued:

“He was talking to us nicely. On my birthday (October 16), he even wished me. His birthday was coming up on December 8, when he was turning 90, and we were thinking of celebrating it nicely. The preparations were on, and then suddenly, he was not there. To personally see him sink was very difficult. Nobody should have to go through this kind of situation.”

Hema Malini felt sorry for Dharmendra’s fans for not getting a chance to see him

Despite being one of the most loved and renowned celebrities, Dharmendra didn’t get any state honours. The news of Dharmendra's passing made headlines around 1 P.M. on November 24, 2025. By the time the family was preparing for the last rites, they had already denied his fans a chance to pay their respects to the immensely loved actor. As soon as the news broke, Dharmendra's daughter, Esha Deol, and his second wife, Hema Malini, were spotted at the Pawan Hans crematorium located in Vile Parle. 

The death was confirmed around 1:30 PM, and by 3 PM, the last rites were finished. Many reports suggested that Dharmendra's family decided against the state honour, opting for a more private farewell for the actor. Dharmendra’s fan and acquaintance, Hamad Al Reyami, who met Hema Malini after Dharmendra’s death, revealed she felt sorry for Dharmendra’s fans, who couldn’t see him for the last time. She also added that after the person leaves, it’s the family who decides.
