The House Of Angadi is one of India's most famous and last ancient textile labels, still standing strong after many decades. The iconic brand is in the headlines again after Indian billionaire, Mukesh Ambani's wife, Nita Ambani was spotted shopping at The House Of Angadi in December 2024. The brand started trending on different social media platforms as people were curious about the brand worn by the wife of India's richest person. Thus, today, we will briefly examine the history and current position of the iconic textile brand in India's textile industry.
K Radharaman is the name that brought his family's 600-year-old legacy in the textile industry in front of the world with the introduction of The House Of Angadi back in 2001. Once, in an old interview, K Radharaman revealed that he was unaware of his family's giant legacy in the textile industry, as he spent most of his time abroad.
However, once K Radharaman had a deep conversation with his grandfather, the latter told him about their family's stature in India's textile industry and everything they had done. The youngster was impressed and decided to take his family's textile legacy forward, and he learnt everything about textile design by himself. Once the self-taught textile designer was convinced of his knowledge, he left the US and returned to India to lay the foundation of The House Of Angadi in Bengaluru.
K Radharaman completed his engineering degree at the famous Cornell University and worked with international brands like Louis Vuitton and Raph Lauren. The engineer-turned-entrepreneur opened a luxurious 18,000-square feet store in Bengaluru in 2001, and since then, he has been creating a stir in the textile industry every now and then. From exquisite Kanjivaram silk sarees to a fusion of modern design with traditional weaves and aesthetic bridal attires, The House Of Angadi leaves no stone unturned in making its mark in the textile industry.
In 2010, K Radharaman decided to open a clothing label by the name Advaya from The House Of Angadi, which instantly became a hit. Currently, Advaya has a strong presence in India's luxury clothing section. With 19.9K followers on Instagram, Advaya is also quite popular on social media. Once, in an old interview with Forbes India, K Radharaman opened up about the idea and vision behind Advaya. The textile designer shared that Advaya is the first design house to present blends of Kanjivaram with fabrics such as linen, organza, and khadi.

K Radharaman further shared that he aims to expand different brands like Angadi Galleria, Angadi Heritage, and Advaya under The House Of Angadi to a completely different level by opening multi-designer outlets in the future. Despite coming from an engineering background, it's inspiring how K Radharaman has managed to take his family's 600-year-old textile legacy to the next level by introducing The House Of Angadi and numerous brands under its name.
K Radharaman founded The House Of Angadi in 2001, but before him, it was his father, R Kothandaraman, who joined their family business in 1954 and took it to another level. He established a fully integrated handloom weaving facility and started attracting some renowned personalities due to the quality of his sarees. R Kothandaraman attended legendary actress, Nargis Dutt and India's former Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi. Carrying his family's legacy forward, K Radharaman has attended a few Bollywood divas, Deepika Padukone, Richa Chadha, and Shilpa Shetty, in the last few years.
The House Of Angadi is one of the few brands in India that spend little money on their advertising, and it is one of the biggest reasons why, even today, not everyone is aware of this luxury brand. However, back in November 2018, when Deepika Padukone got married to Ranveer Singh in Italy, she wore a Kanjeevaram brocade silk saree and a pure zari Kanjeevaram saree. In the beginning, people thought that Sabyasachi Mukherjee designed both sarees because the designer initially failed to credit The House Of Angadi in the posts about Deepika's wedding and reception sarees.
After K Radharaman publicly reminded Sabyasachi Mukherjee of his due credit, the latter gave his label, The House Of Angadi, much-deserved credit in his posts. Once the credit was given, people started noticing the sarees of The House Of Angadi, and it got the much-deserved attention that helped it make waves on social media. Once, in an interview, when K Radharaman was asked about the controversy related to Deepika Padukone's wedding sarees, missing credit and Sabyasachi Mukherjee, he gave a cool response and said:
"I do not and never did have any intention of being critical of Sabyasachi Mukherjee or anyone else. I do not have any negative sentiment towards anyone and we did thank him publicly on social media for giving credit to us after we pointed the error to him."
We hope The House Of Angadi continues to reach new heights in the future, as India's textile industry needs to preserve such an iconic brand, which has a legacy of 600 years. Currently, The House Of Angadi has 86.9K followers on Instagram and continues to attract youngsters with its aesthetic and modern designs with a perfect blend of culture and tradition.
