Huma Qureshi is an actress who has predominantly worked in Hindi cinema. Before joining the film industry, the actress worked as a theatre artist and model in Delhi. While her journey has been slow, she has made a relevant impact on the entertainment industry since her debut in 2012 with Gangs of Wasseypur. However, while her not fitting the Bollywood appearance standards is like a fresh breath of air, the actress has revealed how it has impacted her career in the long run.
Huma Qureshi has played several diverse roles during her stint in the film industry. Her phemmonenal acting in Maharani and Tarla left the audience in absolute awe. However, the actress during a recent appearance revealed how she got a discouraging phone call from a casting agent. She revealed that she was asked by the agent to not take on such mature roles. Huma appeared for a session at a conclave.
Huma Qureshi was speaking at 'The Maharani of Reinvention: Breaking Stereotypes, Empowering Women' session at India Today's Indo-UAE Conclave. During the speech, Huma addressed what her casting director had said. She revealed that her casting director told her that she was such a beautiful woman and was ageing herself by doing such mature characters. She recalled questioning him, why the onus of playing younger parts always falls on the women and stated:
"I am like, ‘Why does this burden of playing younger parts always fall on girls? Why are we expected to try to look younger than who I am? I have done my fair share of singing and dancing around the trees, but if a great script comes my way, I should say no to it because I am afraid of portraying someone a few years older than me."
In the same conversation, Huma revealed that the problem with the entertainment industry was that either one has to get cosmetic procedures done and wait for the certain filmmakers to call her, or she could work with those who made interesting scripts and were willing to work with her. She added that there is a huge shift when one starts taking control of their own life and narratives. She was quoted as saying:
"The problem is either I can do multiple cosmetic surgeries and sit at home and wait for certain filmmakers to call me, or I can go and work with those makers who are making all these interesting scripts, and they want to work with me. This has been a huge shift when you start taking control of your own life choices and narratives."
Huma will be next seen in Subhash Kapoor's Jolly LLB 3 alongside Akshay Kumar, Arshad Warsi, Amrita Rao and Saurabh Shukla as pivotal characters. The actor will soon be back with the fourth season of her OTT show, Maharani, in which she is seen in the role of a politician, 'Rani Bharati'. It also stars Amit Sial, Vineet Kumar, Pramod Pathak, Kani Kusruti, Anuja Sathe, Sushil Pandey, Dibyendu Bhattacharya and Sohum Shah.
