Inside Sea Wind, The 17-Storey Home Mukesh Ambani Shared With Anil Ambani Before USD 4.6 Bn Antilia

When we think of Asia's richest businessman, Mukesh Ambani, and his wife, philanthropist Nita Ambani, it's almost impossible to picture them living anywhere other than Antilia, the towering 27-storey marvel that stands today as one of the world's most expensive private residences. With a staggering value of 4.6 billion US dollars, Antilia not only exudes grandeur but also stands as a symbol of unmatched luxury and opulence. But before this iconic skyscraper took shape, the Ambanis led a very different yet equally luxurious life.

Despite their humble beginnings, the Ambanis rose to become one of Asia’s most influential business families. For many years, Mukesh and Anil Ambani lived together in a joint family setup, even after achieving massive success. Mukesh, Nita, and their children shared a luxurious 17-storey building called Sea Wind with Anil Ambani’s family. Here’s a glimpse into the Ambanis' life before Antilia.

Before moving into their colossal skyscraper on Mumbai's Altamount Road, Mukesh and Nita Ambani lived in the 17-storey Sea Wind building. The building, located at the southernmost tip of Mumbai, in the upscale neighbourhood of Cuffe Parade, is also a marvel of its own. But they were not the only ones living in the building; Sea Wind was a bustling and lively residence that housed the entire Ambani clan.

Mukesh shared the residence with his younger brother, Anil Ambani, along with their wives, Nita and Tina, their children, and their mother, the family’s matriarch, Kokilaben Ambani. After the passing away of their father, Dhirubhai Ambani, the visionary founder of Reliance Industries, the brothers continued to live together under the same roof. According to various reports, despite living as a single unit at Sea Wind, each family had their own separate floor within the building for adequate privacy.

For the richest business family in India, who has multiple high-end mansions spread across the world, Sea Wind wasn’t just another luxury high-rise. For the Ambanis, it holds tremendous emotional significance as this was where Dhirubhai Ambani built the foundation of the Reliance empire. It was under this building’s roof that the late business tycoon spent his final years, watching his sons grow into future industrial giants. It is also the same house, which late Dhirubhai Ambani had called 'home' in many of his interviews.

This building was where business minds exchanged and cultivated valuable ideas; the brothers shared hardships and stayed near their beloved mother till her passing. Interestingly, when the time came for Mukesh and Nita to move into Antilia in 2011, Kokilaben Ambani chose to remain at Sea Wind, staying with Anil Ambani and his family, and living her final days in the memories of her late husband and all the emotions tied to the building.

When compared to Antilia, Sea Wind was undoubtedly modest, but it still remains one of the most luxurious buildings in Mumbai, offering luxury amenities, a helipad, and panoramic views of the Arabian Sea.

A few years after Mukesh Ambani moved out, Anil Ambani moved into a new residence in Mumbai’s upscale Pali Hill area. Spread across 160,000 square meters, the luxurious property also boasts numerous modern amenities. Its estimated value is around a whopping Rs. 5,000 crore (approx. 600 million US Dollars). Despite relocating, Anil Ambani still retains ownership of the family’s former residence at Sea Wind.

Antilia has become a historic mansion, being one of the largest private residences in the world. Spanning 400,000 square feet on land, the 27-storey building stretches 570 feet into the Mumbai sky. Built by some of the biggest constructors, the building is designed to withstand earthquakes of up to 8 on the Richter scale. The palatial building is a town in itself, together with multiple swimming pools, a private movie theatre, a salon, gyms, an ice cream parlour, a sprawling temple, three helipads, nine elevators and six floors of parking. Despite the grandeur of their new home, Mukesh and Nita Ambani have often been praised for staying rooted in their values.
