Janhvi Kapoor made her much-anticipated Red Carpet debut at the 78th Cannes Film Festival. On May 20, 2025, Janhvi graced the prestigious event for the premiere of her latest film, Homebound. The elder daughter of legendary Bollywood actress, Sridevi, made sure to make her first appearance at Cannes a memorable one. She not only made a style statement in her blush pink tissue ensemble but also paid homage to her mother, one of the most astonishing actresses of her time.
Dressed in a delicate couture outfit by Tarun Tahiliani, Janhvi brought a graceful fusion of modernity meets tradition at the global stage. Her hooded veil echoed the iconic look of Sridevi from the time she made heads turn in a glittery hooded outfit by Xerxes Bathena.
When she finally got the chance to grace the prestigious Cannes Red Carpet, Janhvi Kapoor made sure to use this opportunity to showcase Indian artistry on the global stage. The actress’s outfit was a custom ensemble featuring a structured corset and voluminous pleated skirt, made from real tissue fabric specially woven in Banaras. This handwoven textile, rich with cultural legacy, was given a modern finish through a hand-crushing technique, creating an airy, textured silhouette that looked like poetry in motion.
The highlight of Janhvi’s look was a signature Tarun Tahiliani drape that flowed from her shoulder like a sculpted dupatta, looping around her sleek, low bun to resemble a contemporary ghoonghat. This layering was not only a beautiful nod to the traditional bridal aesthetic of India but also a homage to her late mother, Sridevi’s iconic ghoonghat-style hooded look.
To complement her look without overshadowing the minimal elegance of her ensemble, Janhvi’s cousin and stylist for the day, Rhea Kapoor, added layered pearl necklaces and dainty diamond studs from Chopard Jewellery, and a touch of floral garland tucked into her bun. Her dewy makeup, winged eyeliner, and blush tones complemented the soft pastel palette of her attire, while her hairstyle tied the whole look together to scream minimal elegance.

They say that firsts are always special, and Janhvi is making heads turn with her first Cannes appearance. As she walked the red carpet for the premiere of Homebound, Janhvi’s outfit instantly drew comparisons to one of Sridevi’s most iconic looks. With its sculpted silhouette, soft pink hue, and veil-like drape, the ensemble carried a nostalgic charm, which fashion watchdog, Diet Sabya, noted as, “Janhvi channelling mother Sri for first Cannes red carpet Lewk.”
Sridevi, the iconic Chandni girl, has been a symbol of cinematic brilliance and sartorial grace. She made heads turn whenever she graced events in Indian wear that celebrated cultural heritage with a modern twist. One such look was from the time she stunned in an Xerxes Bathena ensemble, featuring a gold-toned sparkly dress with a hood that was a fusion of western wear with the flavour of the Indian ghoonghat. Janhvi's Cannes look felt like a continuation of that timeless legacy.
Janhvi wasn't alone on the red carpet. She was accompanied by her Homebound co-stars, Ishaan Khatter and Vishal Jethwa, director Neeraj Ghaywan, and producers, Karan Johar and Apoorva Mehta. The film, which explores the story of two friends navigating life as police officers in North India, premiered in the prestigious Un Certain Regard section. Hollywood legend, Martin Scorsese, has come on board as the executive producer for the project.
Well, Janhvi’s Cannes debut was surely a celebration of heritage, family, and fashion. What are your views on her Day 1 look?
