Actress, Jennifer Lawrence has broken her silence on the Israel-Palestine issue. She presented her stance regarding the concerning rift between the two nations. Jennifer opened up about the same thing during a press event for her new film, Die, My Love, at the San Sebastián Film Festival. The 35-year-old used the platform to comment on US politics and their way of dealing with the hostile Gaza situation. She condemned the violence taking place in Palestine, calling it 'mortifying'.
Jennifer Lawrence leveraged her celebrity status to discuss matters of global importance. At the 73rd San Sebastian Film Festival on September 26, 2025, the actress spoke out against the violence in Gaza, stating that the situation is 'no less than a genocide'. While attending the festival for her new film, Die, My Love, she called the events 'unacceptable' and said she was 'terrified'. She expressed being scared of a war-wrecked future for her children as well as for the rest of the future generation. Her words were quoted by The Guardian, Deadline and other US media publications as:
"I'm terrified. It's mortifying. What's happening is no less than a genocide, and it's unacceptable. I'm terrified for my children, for all of our children."
Jennifer Lawrence did not dodge any journalist questions regarding controversial political issues, including the Israel-Palestine situation or the state of free speech in the US. However, according to Deadline, the event moderators tried to shut down those inquisitions. Despite such attempts, The Hunger Games star put forth her viewpoints on the issues. Jennifer expressed sadness at the 'disrespect' towards the current American politics. She stated that 'politicians lie' and this perception would shape the future generation's views on the country's politics. The Guardian quoted her as saying:
"What makes me so sad is the disrespect in the discourse of American politics right now and how that is going to be normalised to the kids right now. It's going to be normal to them that politicians lie."
The Israeli-Palestinian issue is a complex dispute over land and self-determination. The conflict in Gaza between Israel and Hamas is a significant escalation of the long-running Israeli-Palestinian conflict, reignited by Hamas's attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. The violence at Gaza has resulted in a devastating humanitarian crisis and significant casualties on both sides. Currently, Israeli military operations continue in Gaza, particularly in Gaza City. A temporary ceasefire in early 2025 collapsed, and negotiations for a more permanent resolution have stalled.
Besides the Israel-Palestine conflict, Jennifer Lawrence also commented on the state of free speech in America. According to her, free speech was under threat in the current political regime of the US. She emphasised the value of films and festivals like the one in San Sebastián, stating that they provided a platform for people to come together and express their views on issues that matter. Jennifer mentioned:

"Our freedom of speech and expression is under attack, and I think the world of cinema and using your voice in artistic ways, having festivals like this where we can learn from each other and realise we are all connected and matter and deserve empathy and freedom, are important."
