Sanya Malhotra starrer Mrs. has become the talk of the town for its relatable portrayal of a homemaker in a patriarchal household. Despite being made on a small budget, the film's plot and message resonated across the different parts of the country. The film received mixed responses, but everyone didn't like how Sanya's lead role as 'Richa' was treated by her husband played by Nishant Dahiya and father-in-law portrayed by Kanwaljit Singh. In a new interview, the latter revealed whether he regrets playing the role.
Kanwaljit Singh played the role of a patriarchal father-in-law, 'Ashwin Kumar,' in Mrs., and his character played an important part in the discussion around the film. He recently sat down for an interview with the Hindustan Times, where he asked if he had any regrets playing the negative role. Sharing his family's reaction, he explained:
"Both my sons have watched it! My wife also has watched it. They absolutely know that this is an antithesis to what I am. Of course, they were a bit shocked. But there's nothing there that I can be ashamed of. Whatever I take on, I am never ashamed of it, and I never regret it. I loved doing it."
Kanwaljit Singh highlighted that since a female director has helmed Mrs., she was able to add a lot of small details and approached it with sensitivity. The actor feels that a male director might not have been able to highlight the issues in that sense. He also shared that after reading the script, he was excited to be a part of it and satisfied with the film's climax. However, Kanwaljit chose not to watch the original version. Explaining how he feels there is a vicious cycle of treating women poorly, he said:
"The vicious circle goes on… hum log sudhrenge nahi! Humare pe koi keechar bhi uchalega toh hum nahi sudhrenge. That was the point! This is the only thing he probably saw his father and grandfather do… So the son has watched his father and grown up the same way. This is ingrained in our personalities."
Kanwaljit Singh drew a parallel between his household and the one shown in the film and revealed that he comes from a more liberal background. He mentioned that coming from a family of five, his father was a liberal man and used to make two cups of tea with one for his mother the first thing in the morning. Recalling people's reactions, he said:
"I used to come from a small town, and people used to wonder, 'Ye Sardar kaisa hai yaar!' We were not exposed to this kind of behavior from parents or people. Except when I went to a friend's house when I sensed something different, which did not happen in my house. In small towns, most of the houses are patriarchal."
Amid the applause and consistent praise of Mrs., a section of fans called it out for promoting toxic feminism. At the same time, it was called out for showing men in a negative light and sending the wrong message. However, Kanwaljit Singh emphasised that they aren't trying to promote anything with the film. Instead, they are showing a mirror to society. In his words:

“Hum sirf aayna dikha rahe hain. Dekho, this is happening in the society. We have to do something about it. Woh kar rahe hain. Aur dekho that this is a vicious cycle. Ek toh chali jati hain keechad phek hain aur dusri ab aa gayi. We must break that cycle."
