Hollywood actress, Kristen Stewart finally saw her dream project take flight as her long-anticipated directorial debut, The Chronology of Water, premiered at the 78th Cannes Film Festival on the night of May 16, 2025. The Twilight star’s directorial debut was not only received with praise and appreciation but also left Stewart teary-eyed when the Palais des Festivals thundered with a solid four-and-a-half-minute standing ovation. Kristen, who recently married her long-time partner, screenwriter Dylan Meyer, looked radiant as she shared the monumental moment with her now-wife.
The Chronology of Water premiered at the 78th Cannes Film Festival, one of the most prestigious events in the world of cinema, on Friday, May 16, 2025. This moment was more than just a professional milestone for the debutant director; it also marked a personal achievement for Kristen Stewart as she got to share this moment in front of the world with her wife by her side.
After the overwhelming standing ovation from the audience, Stewart was seen kissing Meyer before taking the mic for a heartfelt speech. An emotional Kristen was reported by The Hollywood Reporter as saying:
“I don’t have anything else to say; I left it all on the screen. Just thank you all for being here. Seriously, we finished the movie five minutes ago — it’s not even done. We got so lucky, and I’m so grateful to be here.”
The Chronology of Water is an adaptation of Lidia Yuknavitch’s 2011 memoir and portrays the author’s harrowing experiences with childhood sexual abuse and addiction. The screenplay for the film adaptation was co-written by Kristen Stewart and Yuknavitch’s husband, Andy Mingo.
The film was produced by Ridley Scott's Scott Free Productions and reportedly shot over six weeks in the towns of Lavia and Malta. The cast includes Thora Birch, Earl Cave, Susannah Flood, Kim Gordon, and Jim Belushi. At the film’s premiere inside Cannes’ Debussy Theatre, Kristen Stewart thanked everyone for the “radical act of love” and said:

“I’d like to speak so plainly just for one second. This was a radical act of love. All I want to say, before everyone here engages with it with our minds and our bodies, is that after eight years of memory-making, this iteration is asking for nothing but to be seen and heard. And so my extreme gratitude goes to every mind and body who is sitting in this theatre now, that’s going to add to the experience and multiply it. The movie invites you to have at it.”
Another heartfelt moment from the premiere was seen when Stewart paid a raw and powerful tribute to the author, Lidia Yuknavitch, whose memoir inspired this successful project. Just before the movie’s premiere, the Spencer actress, in her signature unapologetic stance, thanked Lidia and said:
“Lydia, thank you for writing and spewing in the very face of f****k. Thank you for the trickle. Thank you for the gush. Thank you for everything. Now let’s rip off this band-aid and watch the f****ing movie!”
Kristen Stewart has dreamt of becoming a director since before she even started her acting career in Hollywood, when she was around nine years old. When she finally got her chance to direct The Chronology of Water, she had to take a difficult journey to get the film financed. Despite every challenge, Stewart told Variety that she vowed not to act in another film until her directorial debut came to life.
Despite limited resources and intense pressure, Kristen Stewart pulled it off with triumph. Would you watch The Chronology of Water?
