There are many times when the most bizarre and unexpected thing becomes viral. In recent months, it is the Labubu doll that has captured the hearts of people. This particular doll has gigantic ears, a mischievous grin and a fur-based exterior that has developed an insane fanbase, especially in the fashion and toy world. Labubu is the quirky monster doll which became viral after celebrities like Ananya Panday, Rihanna and Lisa. Celebrities around the world flaunted this jagged tooth doll, either clipped onto their designer bags or carried as a statement piece. 

Labubu, for the unversed, is a quirky monster, and in a pretty short time, it created a fashion flex. This accessory, for some weird reason, has reached the bags of celebrities, and they are carrying it like as if they are wearing a watch. Example- Dua Lipa's version of Labubu was a chrome-hued monster, and it looked like it had a scientific concept like a sketch.. Who created the Labubu Doll, which became a viral sensation?

Labubu's creator is Hong Kong artist, Kasing Lung, who created the toy as a character in a children's book series titled, The Monsters back in 2015. Nordic fairytales inspired it, the character got characterised by its jagged teeth, pointy ears and sharp fangs. It was in 2019 when Lung had partnered with Pop Mart, a Chinese toy store that made the character famous after they started selling Labubu as a part of their blind box collection series. 

For the unversed, in the blind box, the customer did not know which version of the Labubu doll they would receive until they opened the box. The base model, as a reported by the Brut, is priced at US Dollar 30, which converts to Rs. 2500. A rare or limited version of Labubu is sold for Rs. 48,000 or even more than that. Labubu Dolls have already been sold out in most of countries and have also transcended borders. The craze of the dolls has also risen in the USA, and Pop Mart's app has seen a rise in downloads after Labubu 3.0 'Big Into Energy' collection was launched.

How did the Labubu Doll become famous?

In 2024, K-Pop star, Lisa, who had 106 million followers had shared a snap with the doll. It gave rise to its global popularity. It is apparently Lisa's favourite from Pop Mart's limited collection. The K-Pop star had a huge Labubu as well as a tiny Labubu keychain. After Lisa, there were many other Hollywood celebrities like David Beckham, Kim Kardashian, and Dua Lipa who were spotted with gremlin-like toys. It was in May 2025 when Bollywood actress Ananya Panday also joined the bandwagon of the Labubu fan club after she was seen with a pink-hued Labubu toy in her bag.

When Labubu dolls left UK fans disappointed with their sudden disappearance

Kaising Lung, apart from the Labubu, had created Zimomo, Spooky, Tycoco and Pato. The dolls, which were inspired by Nordic mythology, have appeared in collaboration with uber luxurious brands such as Miu Miu, Coach and Louis Vuitton. When the trend got traction, people queued in huge numbers outside stores to purchase them. Every time a new Labubu got released it was sold in minutes. There were fans who had even camped overnight and also had a fight with other fellow customers due to the limited stock.

 Labubu dolls had suddenly disappeared from the UK stores, leaving fans very upset. Labubu's fame is associated with the kidult phenomenon, where adults get childhood toys to feel comforted. As Labubu continues to captivate audiences worldwide, Pop Mart shows no signs of slowing down. With plans for new collections, collaborations and potential digital integrations, Labubu’s presence in the collectables market is poised to grow even further.
