Even if you are not a Bollywood fan, you might be aware of the immensely popular early 90s affair involving Sanjay Dutt and Madhuri Dixit. First shared the screen space in 1988 film, Khatron Ke Khiladi, Madhuri and Sanjay were a delight for movie buffs with the super-hit films, Khalnayak, Thanedaar and Saajan. Madhuri and Sanjay’s chemistry created a rage and were last seen together in 1997 film, Mahaanta. However, Madhuri and Sanjay had always denied any romantic linkups between them and kept the distance from each other over the years - until now! Karan Johar, the owner of Dharma Productions, successfully managed to bring in together Madhuri Dixit and Sanjay Dutt as an on-screen couple once again, after 21 years since the release of Mahaanta in 1997. Alongside these two yesteryear actors, the period love story Kalank also stars Varun Dhawan, Alia Bhatt, Aditya Roy Kapoor and Sonakshi Sinha. On March 12, 2019, the team of Kalank got under a roof for the teaser launch of the much-awaited 2019 film. The on-screen couples in the film, Alia Bhatt-Varun Dhawan, Aditya Roy Kapoor-Sonakshi Sinha, Madhuri Dixit-Sanjay Dutt, were twinning at the teaser launch.
During the teaser launch of Kalank, Sanjay Dutt spoke about his old association with Karan Johar’s father, Yash Johar and experience working with Madhuri Dixit. Sanjay said, “I was very close to your (Karan) dad. It’s always been a pleasure working with Dharma. To work with Varun, Sonakshi, Alia and most of all ma’am (Madhuri ji) after so many years for Kalank has been amazing. I love you all.” He added, "Bohot acha laga aur bohot samay ke baad main inke saath kaam kar raha hoon. Aur yehi koshish karunga ki aur zyada kaam karoon inke saath.”
Madhuri Dixit too, shared her experience reuniting with her former co-stars as she recently worked with Anil Kapoor in Total Dhamaal and in Kalank, with Sanjay Dutt after 21 years. She said, "Hum 20 plus years ke baad kaam kar rahe hai saath me. So it's always wonderful to work with co-actors you've worked with before. It's been wonderful (working with him)."
Varun Dhawan interrupted them and revealed that while everyone would address Madhuri as ‘Ma'am’ because she is senior to them, Sanjay Dutt too, would refer to her as ‘Ma'am’ on the sets of Kalank. Alia Bhatt then asked Varun that he should learn from Sanjay and address her as ‘Ma'am’, to which Varun replied that I address you as ‘Alia Ma’. For the unversed, Sridevi was previously supposed to play the character of Bahaar Begum in Kalank, but after her unfortunate demise, Madhuri Dixit stepped in for the role. Sridevi’s daughter, Janhvi Kapoor announced the same and thanked Madhuri for taking up the role. Sharing a photo of Sridevi and Madhuri, Janhvi wrote, “Abhishek Varman’s next film was very close to mom’s heart ...Dad, Khushi and I are thankful to Madhuriji for now being a part of this beautiful film….”
Speaking about Madhuri Dixit and Sanjay Dutt sharing the screen space again, a source had earlier shared, "Yes, Madhuri Dixit and Sanjay Dutt have agreed to work together for this film and it is indeed the best news in the longest. Ever since Madhuri came on board, everyone was wondering if she would be willing to work with Dutt, owing to their controversial past. But, after much back and forth and some discussions, both the actors have given their nod."
In an interview last year, another source addressed Madhuri Dixit's completely professional attitude towards working with her alleged ex, Sanjay Dutt, "Whatever happened between the two is past. They have moved on happily. Also, Madhuri has always believed that personal equations shouldn't matter when it comes to professional work. It is a mature decision from both and they are both excited to work together almost after 25 years. The film rolls next month and they are aiming to release it in April 2019."
To give a recap of Madhuri Dixit and Sanjay Dutt’s much-talked about affair, the Saajan couple were a ‘thing’ in the 90s and everyone knew about their torrid affair. When Sanjay and Madhuri fell in love with each other, he was married to his first wife, Richa Sharma. In 1993, when Sanjay was arrested for the illegal possession of arms under TADA, Madhuri decided to end their alleged relationship and disassociate herself from him.
In a throwback interview, Madhuri Dixit opened up about the camaraderie she shares with Sanjay Dutt and was quoted as saying, “My favourite partner is Sanjay Dutt, he’s a real joker…and his stories make me laugh all the time, but he is also a gentleman. Sanju is a fantastic person. He has a loving heart and, in contrast to the widely held view, a good sense of humour. He is the only guy who makes me laugh all the time. He does not play games. He is open and uncomplicated.” (Also Read: Nita Ambani's Resemblance With Mother Purnima Dalal And Sister Mamta Dalal Proves Beauty Is In Genes)
