Matlock marked its return with Season 2 on October 12, 2025, featuring an ample dose of drama, chaos, and a renewed friendship between 'Matty' and 'Olympia', which might not be as authentic as it seems. The return of the season has brought back some sad emotions for the fans as their short-lived happiness over the star lawyers' friendship is cut short after 'Olympia' uncovered the lie 'Matty' has been telling her as she infiltrated the law firm of Jacobson Moore, searching for a villain who hid evidence that could have saved lives in the opioid epidemic, particularly 'Matty's' own daughter.
While on the surface everything seems fine, things are starting to fall apart underneath as they sneak behind each other's backs in the premiere episode. This episode saw at least one actual case of smoke and mirrors, and two cases of life-altering paternity. The episode set up a season full of drama and intrigue for the cast. However, how many secrets this season will unfold, only time will tell.
In the Season 1 finale, we saw 'Olympia' discover the person who illegally hid the incriminating documents was her ex-husband, and father of her children, 'Julian' (Jason Ritter). While he has convinced her not to turn him in to the press or authorities, 'Olympia' refused to help him further cover up his crime by destroying the document herself. Instead, she took it and secured it in a safe in her house while she tries to pin the crime on 'Julian's' father, 'Senior' (Beau Bridges), who had ordered him to hide the evidence.
'Olympia' is torn about what to do about her ex-husband, and nearly confesses what happened to 'Matty'. However, she soon decides otherwise, fearing how this would impact her children. She and 'Matty' further their search for a woman who might have the evidence of 'Senior's' wrongdoings. However, the tension is evident not just to the audience but to 'Matty' as well, as she breaks into her safe, uses a smoke bomb, swaps the documents with a dummy, and plans a leak to the press.
Another unanswered question in the Season 1 finale was about the man who showed up at 'Matty's' house, claiming to be the father of her 14-year-old grandson, 'Alfie' (Aaron D. Harris), whom Matty and Edwin have been raising since their daughter died. 'Matty's' hackles are up as the man, a former addict like her late daughter, who has been out of 'Alfie's' life for over a decade, wants to meet her grandson, but not before she gets a DNA test. While the test confirms that the man is indeed 'Alfie's' father, he is also not sober like he claimed to be.

'Matty' and 'Edwin' want to escape with 'Alfie' as soon as they wrap up the opioids investigation. However, considering the show doesn't really work if 'Matty' leaves the law firm, something is bound to get in their way. Meanwhile, 'Matty's' fellow associate at the firm, Billy (David Del Rio), is coping with the news that his ex is pregnant with his baby. He promises to support her decision to keep or terminate the pregnancy, but secretly hopes he won't become a father just yet. However, he comes back from a meeting with his ex to announce that they're getting back together to raise the baby.
