There are many actresses from yesteryear who have ruled the silver screen with their on-screen presence and amazing performances. One such actress was Priya Rajvansh, who made her debut in the Hindi film industry with the 1964 film, Haqeeqat. The actress is known for playing the role of ‘Heer’ in the 1970 film, Heer Ranjha.
From 1964 to 1986, Priya Rajvansh acted in seven films, and the ones that brought her fame and success were Haqeeqat, Heer Ranjha, Hanste Zakhm, and Kudrat. She has worked with some of the leading names in the Hindi film industry, including Rajesh Khanna, Hema Malini, and Dev Anand.
Often, the faces that rule the screens lead a completely opposite life behind the camera. Their reel life is completely opposite from their real lives. Same was the case with Priya, who was murdered by her lover, Chetan Anand’s sons, Ketan Anand and Vivek Anand. Let us read on to know the tragic end of Priya, who gave many blockbuster hits to Indian cinema.
Born in Shimla to Sunder Singh, Priya was the sister of Waheeda Rehman’s husband, Kamaljeet Singh. After her graduation, Priya attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London. It was Thakur Ranveer Singh who introduced Priya to filmmaker, Chetan Anand, the brother of Dev Anand. Chetan was looking for a fresh face for his film, Heer Ranjha.
Chetan asked Priya to come down to Mumbai, however, the film got postponed and Priya made her debut with Haqeeqat. Chetan was already married with kids, but his marriage started having cracks. Soon, Chetan got separated from his wife, Uma Anand, due to incompatibility. By the time filming of Heer Ranjha ended, Chetan and Priya were madly in love with one another.

Although Chetan Anand was separated from his wife, the two were not divorced. Due to this reason, Priya and Chetan could not marry and were in a live-in relationship. Despite Chetan being 16 years older than Priya, their love for each other knew no bounds. They were extremely dependent on each other and had a great understanding.
Priya and Chetan’s paradise was turned upside down when he passed away in 1997. After his death, Priya along with his sons from first marriage, Ketan and Vivek, inherited his property. His will also included Priya, the right of lifelong residence in his beachfront bungalow in Ruia Park. The will had mentioned that the bungalow would be reverted to Chetan’s sons after her death.
Three years after Chetan’s death, Priya Rajvansh was murdered in 2000 in the same bungalow. Soon, Chetan’s sons, Ketan and Vivek were arrested for Priya’s murder. Ketan and Vivek were convicted and were sentenced to life, but they were granted bail after spending two years in jail.
In an interview with Filmfare, Priya Rajvansh's neighbour, Maharani Samyukta Kumari revealed the tragedy that had unfolded on that fateful evening of her death and recalled:
"The evening she died, she was supposed to have a drink with us. But she didn't turn up at the time, which was strange. We sent the watchman to inquire. The maid said she'd be coming soon. But she didn't turn up. We sent him again and that's when the maid said she'd fainted. We ran across, my husband, my mother-in-law and me… and the drama unfolded."
Priya Rajvansh’s life was tragic but her death only left behind many mysteries.
