Monster: The Ed Gein Story is the third instalment of the Netflix true-crime anthology series, created by Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan. The first two instalments were centred around the infamous Jeffrey Dahmer and the Menendez brothers, Lyle and Erik. The series aims to bring to light the stories and twisted mindsets of the world's most notorious criminals by taking creative liberties and making them interesting to watch. The Ed Gein Story featured cameos of several other criminals besides the leading man, such as Richard Speck, also known as the Birdman.
Unlike most criminals, Richard was a married man. His wife, Shirley Annette Malone, stayed with him for a few years before things turned ugly between them, leading to their permanent split. But the process of moving on wasn't easy for someone with a troubled mindset like Richard. Read to know all about his wife, Shirley, the reason for the separation and the impact of the same on Richard Speck.
Richard Speck met Shirley Annette Malone at the Texas State Fair when she was just 15. At that time, Richard used to indulge a lot with pr*stitutes and dr*gs. He started dating the underage Shirley Annette Malone, and within three weeks of the relationship, he got her pregnant, as reported by Criminal Minds Wiki. Then, they got married on January 19, 1962, and started living as spouses, while preparing to welcome their first child. Richard was involved in unlawful activities when his daughter, Robbie Lynn, was born on July 5, 1962.
He was even spending his time in jail during her birth, due to getting involved in a fight in public under the influence of alcohol. He was also charged with several other crimes, such as theft, cheque fraud and aggravated a**ault during his marriage with Shirley and often spent his time behind bars. His wife, Shirley, was dissatisfied with his aggressive behaviour and even faced an assault by him. Richard used to suspect her of cheating and tried to punish her by fondling women outside their home, in front of her.
After four years of marriage, Richard Speck and Shirley Annette Malone's relationship ended in divorce in 1966. Notably, it was the same year as Speck's notorious mass murder. During the divorce trial, Shirley recalled the physical ab*se inflicted by Richard on her, including forced s*x at knifepoint. After their divorce was finalised in March 1966, Richard learned that his ex-wife had remarried shortly after. It worsened his already disturbing mental state. He then fled Dallas for Chicago, which set the stage for his murder spree in July 1966.

Richard Speck committed a series of violent crimes in 1966, including a mass murder in Chicago, a rape and robbery in Monmouth, Illinois, and possibly other unsolved murders. On July 13, 1966, Speck broke into a townhouse on Chicago's South Side, which was a dormitory for student nurses. Over several hours, he murdered eight women in their twenties by stabbing, strangling, and slashing their throats. He also r*ped his final victim. A ninth nurse, Corazon Amurao, survived by hiding under the bed. Her testimony was crucial to Speck's identification and conviction.
In April of the same year, he robbed and r*ped 65-year-old Virgil Harris in her home in Monmouth, Illinois. Robert was also questioned regarding the brutal beating death of a Monmouth barmaid, Mary Kathryn Pierce, whose body was found in April 1966. He fled town before he could be questioned further. He was also interrogated regarding the murder of more women that occurred in the spring and summer of 1966, but he was never formally charged with those crimes.
