After nearly four decades, legendary thrash metal band, Megadeth, has announced their decision to bid adieu to their fans in a last farewell tour. Founder of the band and guitarist, Dave Mustaine, recently announced that the upcoming album of Megadeth will be their last. With complex guitar riffs and fiery voices, Megadeth has defined the niche genre of thrash metal. As the band is all set to say their goodbyes, here's everything to know about Megadeth.
In the unique genre of thrash metal music, there used to be three top bands in the '80s before Megadeth joined in as a fourth. These bands were, Anthrax, Slayer, and Metallica. Dave Mustaine was part of Metallica, and as the lead guitarist, he played a significant role in shaping the band. However, after being fired from Metallica, Dave vowed to form his own group that would be better than Metallica. He roped in Lor Kane for vocals, Robby McKinney for guitar, and Matt Kisselstein for bass in 1983.
Dijon Carruthers joined to play the drums as well. Later, Dave added his neighbours, David Ellefson and Greg Handevidt, who played bass and guitar respectively. And thus the band Fallen Angels was formed. In his 2010 book, Mustaine: A Heavy Metal Memoir, Dave revealed that he had written a song called 'Megadeth', however, the band's lead vocalist at the time suggested to use the name for the band instead. Hence, after performing as Fallen Angels for a while, the band changed their name to 'Megadeth' and the song was renamed to 'Set the World Afire'. Dave wrote in his book:
"Lor wasn't in the band long, but give credit where credit is due: It was Lor who suggested Megadeth as the band's name. It happened when we were driving around one night, talking about finding exactly the right moniker. Lor knew I had already written a song entitled 'Megadeth' and thought it would work equally well as a band name. And he was right. So, thanks for that, Lor."
From it's inception in 1983 to the current year of 2025, many of Megadeth's members have changed over time, except for the founder, Dave Mustaine. Given a kidney stone removal, substance abuse relapse and other health issues, Dave had to take a step back from the band and focus on recovery. During this time, Megadeth went on a hiatus in the absence of the founder. As of now, along with Dave the current members of the band are, Teemu Mantysaari, James LoMenzo, and Dirk Verbeuren.
