Netflix's Monster: The Ed Gein Story focuses on Ed Gein, who was believed to be a notorious criminal in the history of America. He was a 1950s serial killer and robber. He murdered two women, and his Wisconsin farm was turned into an hour of horrors. Ryan Murphy's series tried its best to narrate the famous murderer's story and how he was dealing with schizophrenia, and the late diagnosis turned him into a killer.
Season three of Monster premiered on October 3, 2025. 'Ed Gein' was played by Charlie Hunnam, who is loved for the way he portrayed the famous murderer and body snatcher. Netflix's series focused on how Gein turned into a murderer who would rob graves and create furniture out of human body parts. The eight-episode series shows how Gein's deadly acts helped evolve the crime genre into iconic films.
After getting arrested for two murders, Ed Gein was diagnosed with schizophrenia. He was found unfit to stand the trial and was sent to a mental health facility. Later, he was treated for his mental health issue with medication. The show's final episode showed Ed's fantasies, turned into daydreams about murder, which made him think that he helped the FBI catch Ted Bundy. He was later diagnosed with cancer. While he was getting treated, Adeline (Suzanna's son) visited him, and he convinced him not to follow his murderous footsteps.
In an interview with Variety, Winkler, the director, revealed that he wanted Ed Gein's story to conclude with the emotional factor of 'mother' as it was Gein's 'rosebud' moment, which shows the underlying issues that forced him to act in such a heinous way. He said:
"The very last shot of the whole show, with them on the porch, was the very last thing we shot, and I had no idea we were going to do it. We were doing little bits and bobs back in L.A. because we missed some things when we went off to Chicago. I don’t know where it came from, but I just said, “Let’s go onto the porch.” And I just knew that “Only a mother could love you” should be the last line of the series, because it’s just a whole “Rosebud” for why Ed did what he did in our version. And we didn’t know we were going to do it."
Ed Gein was a serial killer whose crimes came into public light almost 50 years ago. His life has been shown in the third instalment of the Netflix anthology series directed by Ryan Murphy. However, the serial killer was romantically involved with Adeline Watkins. In the Netflix series, Suzanna Son is playing the role of his alleged love interest. Discussing the real-life Adeline Watkins' love story, she once spoke about her decades-long romance with the serial killer, but later took a U-turn from her statements.
