My Hero Academia, one of the most popular Japanese shounen manga series, was adapted into one of the most beloved anime series in 2016. After delivering 7 amazing seasons, the show is back for the last time to tie up the story of the 'Heroes'. Anime lovers and otakus around the world have been waiting for the final showdown with a lot of excitement. As the first episode of My Hero Academia season 8 is here, here's a review of the premiere.
My Hero Academia has always done a great job of balancing the portrayal of the 'Quirks' of the 'Heroes' and their mighty powers, while also depicting their vulnerable and human sides. The first episode of My Hero Academia season 8 has upped the ante on the emotional side of the story. The episode, titled Toshinori Yagi: Rising Origin, does exceptionally well in revealing to the viewers the vulnerable side of 'All Might'. Throughout the seasons, 'All Might' has been portrayed as a legendary and powerful hero. However, the season 8 premiere gives more nuance to his character by showing emotional depth. Perhaps the rest of season 8 will also follow this theme.
My Hero Academia is known to have one of the best animations among all shonen anime. And the last season of the series does not disappoint either. Anime experts have stated that the episode is worthy of a rewatch solely for its action sequences. These energetic sequences are complemented well by the heavy metal background score. The deadly showdown between 'All Might' and 'All For One' peaks with this music playing in the background.
My Hero Academia season 7 was released in October 2024. Hence, it hasn't been a long time since fans last saw the battle between 'All Might' and 'All For One' in the season 7 finale. However, the premiere of season 8 of My Hero Academia spends almost half of the episode rehashing everything that happened in the previous season's end. Hence, there isn't much new material for fans to watch in the first episode. This also slows down the pace of the story and could be tedious for viewers who have very recently finished watching the seventh season.
Keeping the repetition aside, My Hero Academia's premiere of season 8 is worth a watch for all anime lovers. The animation is top-notch as always. However, the best part about this season 8 is that it keeps reminding people of the core values that the story wanted to depict. Even without his 'Quirks', 'All Might' gives all of his efforts to the fight, although he is sure that he is going to die. He also employs techniques that he has learned from his students. Hence, the episode conveys the core message of My Hero Academia, namely, unwavering courage and passing on the legacy of heroism.
