One of the most popular actresses, who saw the peak of stardom in her career was Nargis Dutt. Born as Fatima Rashid, Nargis began her acting career with a minor role at the age of five. She was the first Indian actress to receive a Padma Shree for her contribution towards cinema. One of the most promising actresses, Nargis was loved for her beauty and splendid acting.
In a three-decade-long career, Nargis featured in many successful films like Andaz, Aag, Barsaat, Shree 420, Chori Chori, Mother India, and many more. Nargis was at the peak of her career when she married actor, Sunil Dutt and the couple started their family together. However, to raise her children, Priya, Namrata and Sanjay, she quit the entertainment world.
In May 1981, the actress left for her heavenly abode after giving a tough fight to cancer. Her last days were very traumatic, and the actress suffered a lot. Let us read on to know her last days in a coma and how her husband, Sunil Dutt, stayed like a pillar of strength for her.
Nargis fell ill in 1980, and was admitted to a hospital in Bombay. After she started reducing weight rapidly, many tests were carried out, and the actress was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. She underwent treatment for the same in New York. During her treatment, Nargis went through a lot of suffering. She was operated five to six times.
Her daughter, Namrata, once told Pinkvilla that soon after Nargis’ pancreas was removed, she began haemorrhaging internally. The doctors had to operate on her five to six times as the bleeding didn’t stop. They stitched and stapled her body multiple times, after which the actress went into a coma. In her words:

“Coming to Mom’s treatment, at first her pancreas was removed. Soon after the surgery, she began haemorrhaging internally. They reopened her five to six times, because the bleeding just wouldn’t stop. When they couldn’t stitch her, they stapled her. The body went through so much trauma that she slipped into coma."
Throughout her treatment, Sunil Dutt stood with Nargis like her shadow. He fed her, cleaned her and spoke to her every day. As per Namrata, although Sunil Dutt showed immense strength in front of everyone, he cried for her when he was alone. Namrata recalled that Sunil would watch Nargis with binoculars as her room was opposite theirs.
After physiotherapy and other treatments, Nargis successfully fought cancer and returned to India from the US cancer free in 1981. Soon, Nargis had developed a urinary infection, and as complications increased due to low immunity, she was put on a ventilator, where she had slipped into a coma again. The actress bid adieu to the world on May 3, 1981, at the age of 52. Nargis wished to be dressed in her wedding saree during her last rites and her wish was fulfilled. Speaking about the same, Namrata said:
“Mom had a fear of fire after the Mother India accident. Her last wish was that she be buried. Dad fulfilled that. For the final farewell, she was dressed in her wedding attire – a red and green gota saree. The premiere of Sanjay’s debut film Rocky was held on 7 May 1981. As a mark of respect for Mom, who was so keen to watch the film, a chair was left vacant between Dad and Sanjay."
Nargis was hailed as the first lady of Indian cinema, but her tragic death left her family and fans in despair.
