Naseeruddin Shah, 19, Was Married To Parveen Murad, 34, He Took 12 Years To Pay The Alimony

Several Bollywood actors are highly admired for their on-screen presence. One such actor is Naseeruddin Shah, who is one of the most respected actors in Indian cinema. Fans love him for his strong performance and unique film choices. Over the years, it is not just his professional life that grabbed attention, but also his personal life. 

Naseeruddin Shah's personal life reveals a completely different side of him. Several fans already know his relationship and married life with Ratna Pathak Shah, but not a lot of them know that Naseeruddin Shah was married at the age of 19, to Parveen, who was 34 years old at that time. 

Naseeruddin Shah’s relationship and marriage with Parveen

According to multiple reports, Naseeruddin Shah was a student at Aligarh Muslim University, when he first met Parveen Murad. Reportedly, Naseeruddin was 19 years old, and Parveen was 34 at that time. Allegedly, Parveen was a divorcee and had children before meeting Naseeruddin Shah. In 1969, even though Naseeruddin was still a student, the two tied the knot in a traditional ceremony. Within a year, the ex-couple welcomed their first and only child- a daughter, Heeba. 

Why did Naseeruddin Shah and Parveen Murad part ways?

Naseeruddin Shah and Parveen’s marriage soon started facing problems. One major problem between them began before they got married, which was family opposition. Parveen was divorced with children and almost 14-15 years older to Naseeruddin, which was an issue for his family. On the other hand, Parveen's family doubted the union and in advance, they demanded a huge mahr (alimony), in case they ever got divorced. Later, the duo grew apart because of different priorities. Slowly and gradually, the duo decided to part ways. 

Naseeruddin Shah took 12 years to pay the mahr

After their divorce, Naseeruddin Shah had to pay the huge alimony to Parveen Murad, as pre-decided by Parveen’s family. Because of that, Naseeruddin Shah couldn’t move on quickly. Multiple reports say that he took more than a decade to pay the entire alimony. During that time, Naseeruddin Shah was working as an actor and years later, he got the opportunity to star in the film, Masoom. By signing this film, he was able to pay the entire amount to Parveen and finally move on after 12 years. 

Naseeruddin Shah's relationship with Ratna Pathak

While Naseeruddin Shah was struggling to pay the alimony amount to Parveen, he met the love of his life, Ratna Pathak, in 1975. They met while doing theatre and soon became friends. Slowly and gradually that friendship turned into love and they started dating. As Naseeruddin Shah was not legally free from his first marriage, he couldn’t get married to Ratna. So, the couple got into a live-in relationship. 

After dating for almost seven years, in 1982, the duo got married and started their happily ever after life. Soon, the couple welcomed two sons, Imaad Shah and Vivaan Shah. As of 2025, it has been more than four decades that Naseeruddin and Ratna are together as each other's biggest support systems. 

Who was Parveen Murad?

Parveen Murad was commonly known as Manara Sikri and she was the half-sister of actress, Surekha Sikri. Several sources suggest that Parveen had studied medicine. After her divorce from Naseeruddin Shah, reportedly, Parveen and her daughter, Heeba left India and stayed in Iran for several years. Parveen Murad passed away in 1982, the same year when Naseeruddin Shah tied the knot with Ratna Pathak Shah.

Naseeruddin Shah was born on July 20, 1950, in Uttar Pradesh. After studying at Aligarh Muslim University, he then trained as an actor at the National School of Drama and the Film and Television Institute of India. In his long career, he has appeared in films like Sparsh, Masoom, Aakrosh, Paar, ZNMD and more. Despite having a troubled marriage with Parveen, Naseeruddin is in touch with his daughter, Heeba.
