Inside Panipat's Wedding Drama: Swords Drawn, Groom Returns Without Bride Over Chandni Chowk Lehenga

Weddings in India are more than just a union of two families, it is filled with grandeur, vibrant outfits, lively music, good food, and a whole lot of drama! However, sometimes, things can even take a darker turn, only to end up with traumatic memories for the families. Something similar happened at a recent wedding in Panipat, Haryana when what should have been a fairytale union turned into a full-blown battlefield, over a lehenga. Yes, you read that right!

The lehenga showdown that ended in a broken wedding

The drama unfolded on February 23, 2025, when a groom from Amritsar arrived in Panipat with his baraat, expecting a seamless wedding ceremony. However, the merry celebrations took a turn for the worse when the bride's family objected to the lehenga brought by the groom's side. They insisted that the bride wear a lehenga they had purchased from Chandni Chowk for Rs. 40,000, instead of the one provided by the groom's family.

lehenga showdown

Adding fuel to the fire, the bride’s family also accused the groom’s family of gifting artificial jewellery instead of real gold. What started as a disagreement quickly turned into an intense brawl, with relatives from both sides hurling accusations at each other.

Allegations from the groom’s side

Things took a darker turn when one of the guests allegedly pulled out a sword, causing the atmosphere to heat up, and leading to extreme chaos at the venue. As things started getting out of hand, the police had to be called to control the situation. The ruckus ultimately ended in the marriage being called off.

In an interview with ETV Bharat, the groom’s brother stated that the bride’s family had been pressuring them for the marriage and demanding expensive gifts. After initially demanding a bridal lehenga worth Rs. 20,000, they later increased their demand and wanted a more expensive one. He told in the interview:

“We gave them Rs 10,000 to book the wedding hall. They first demanded a lehenga worth Rs 20,000 and then chose an even costlier one. We had just built a new house for which we had to take a loan, so we brought whatever (lehenga) we could afford… We bought the lehenga but she (the bride's grandmother) claimed it was old. We even hired a car for Rs 35,000 to travel to and fro.”

What did the bride’s mother say?

The bride’s mother, a widow supporting her family through manual labour, alleged that the groom’s family had demanded Rs. 1 lakh and failed to provide basic wedding essentials like garlands. Despite paying Rs. 13,000 in advance for a Chandni Chowk lehenga, she claimed they falsely accused her of demanding Rs. 1 lakh. She shared:

"As soon as the relationship was fixed, the boy's family started pressuring us for marriage. We fixed the wedding for February 23. The baraat came from Amritsar and the boy's family brought an old lehenga and artificial jewellery for the bride. They did not even bring the garland. When we asked the reason, they said that we do not have the tradition of garlanding. They started fighting and even took out a sword and started beating us.”
