Meet Swaroop Sampat, Wife Of Paresh Rawal, Beauty Pageant Winner, Quit Acting To Pursue PhD

Many talented names in Bollywood have been inspiring us with not just their acting prowess but also their dedication towards their craft. One such actress is Swaroop Sampat. Swaroop Sampat made her Bollywood debut with Naram Garam (1981) and then starred in films like Nakhuda, Sawaal, Himmatwala and others.

However, she also appeared on the TV show, Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi in 1984, which gave her immense fame. She has also appeared on the popular show, Shanti. Swaroop was selected as one of the top 10 Global finalists for the Global Teacher Prize from 179 countries worldwide. Swaroop Sampat is a former Miss India

Swaroop Sampat won the title of Miss India in 1979 and also represented India at the Miss Universe pageant. After winning the prestigious pageant, Swaroop began her acting career. She is the daughter of Gujarati theatre actor, Bachu Sampat. It was during her college that Swaroop developed an interest in theatre and acted in plays.

Swaroop Sampat is married to acclaimed Bollywood actor, Paresh Rawal

Paresh’s love for art and theatre led to his meeting with his wife, Swaroop Sampat. It was love at first sight for Paresh. In just the first meeting, he decided to get married to Swaroop. The duo dated each other for twelve years and tied the knot in 1987. Paresh and Swaroop have two sons, Aditya Rawal and Aniruddh Rawal. 

When Paresh Rawal told his friend he would only get married to Swaroop

Swaroop was handing out brochures at an Indian National Theatre festival, where her father was the chief producer. At the same event, Paresh and his college friends were performing their play. It was at that moment that Paresh told his friend that he was going to marry her. The veteran actor revealed that his close friend, Mahendra Joshi, had informed him that Swaroop was his boss' daughter, but he was so in love with her that he wanted to try everything until the end.

Why did Swaroop and Paresh Rawal get married after 12 years of dating?

Paresh proposed to Swaroop in 1975, but the two got married in 1987, exactly 12 years later. The reason behind the delay was that he wanted to settle his career before getting married to her. Swaroop, too, was very clear that she would not elope with Paresh as she was the only daughter born in her family after years.

Swaroop Sampat pursued her education after marriage and kids and received PhD at 43

A few years later, she married and had kids; Swaroop decided to complete her education at the age of 43. She took a break from acting and enrolled herself in a PhD in Education at the University of Worcester. She did her thesis on using drama to enhance life skills in children with learning disabilities.

In 2010, Swaroop released a book on the subject, Learning Disabilities in a Nutshell: Dyslexia, Dysgraphia, Dyscalculia, Dyspraxia. She was also selected by the then Chief Minister, Narendra Modi, to head an education program for kids. Swaroop takes special workshops for kids in rural areas. Talking about her new role as a teacher, Swaroop once told the Times of India:

“Right now, I'm a teacher. I'm not an actress or former beauty queen. Many of my friends in corporates ask me how long I will do this free social work. I tell them if I feel I have expertise or knowledge in a certain field, I have to disseminate it in public interest.”
