James Gunn's Peacemaker Season 2 has come to a close with an emotionally satisfying conclusion, though it lacks a narrative finale. Fans have been extremely excited for the big finale. However, they were left with the short end of the stick as the storyline failed to wrap up several other narrative threads. While 'Chris Smith' and 'Emilia Harcourt' won hearts, there is still too much to be delivered.
While Peacemaker Season 2 resolved the core relationship between 'Chris' and 'Emilia', it left a lot to be desired elsewhere. Despite having an extended running time of 58 minutes, the episode fails to capitalise on its length. The strong characters could not cover the glossing over of the key storylines, resulting in more setup than payoff. However, the finale teases connections to future DCU projects; it feels like a series of concepts rather than a cohesive ending.
'Chris' and 'Emilia' truly became the heart of the Peacemaker Season 2 finale, offering an end to the long-awaited resolution to the will-they-won't-they dynamics. Their relationship, which has subtly been evolving throughout the season, led to a beautifully acted scene where 'Emilia' finally admits that the night on the boat meant everything to her. James' masterful touch enhances the emotional weight of the scene. The couple's connection, born out of a drunken night, feels authentic and earned, providing a satisfying payoff in an otherwise deserted plotline.
While the 'Chris-Emilia' plotline won hearts, there were other narratives that remained untouched. Frank Grillo's 'Rick Flag Sr.', once a morally complex character, became a villain out of nowhere, creating a sense of narrative confusion. His partnership with 'Lex Luthor's' old command centre feels odd, especially considering his previously sympathetic portrayal in Creature Commandos. To add to it, the rushed treatment of 'Adebayo's' marital troubles and the lack of closure on the Nazi planet subplot made the episode feel further incomplete.
Even in the case of the emergencies of the super-spy organisation, Checkmate, there was a lack of proper buildup to make it seem like a natural evolution in the plot. So, while the finale did a decent job of setting a future storyline, it left viewers with more questions than answers. While it offers an oddly satisfying conclusion in parts, the finale overall serves more as a stepping stone for future seasons than a truly fulfilling end to this one.

Another question that has plagued the minds of viewers is whether there will be a Peacemaker Season 3. HBO has not officially renewed Peacemaker for Season 3. However, James Gunn has already expressed his intrigue in the development of 'Peacemaker' and, in an interview with Deadline, even hinted that the 11th Street Kids story might not be over. He was quoted as saying:
"You're gonna find out more in episode 8 because it's not necessarily that. Some of these characters will continue, but also, it’s not exactly Peacemaker 3. I'm not ruling it out. You'll see (episode) 8 and maybe you'll find out a little bit more."
