Prince Charles Never Wanted To Marry Diana? He Cried, Was Still In Love With Camilla, Claims Expert

The infamous love triangle among the royals, including then-Prince Charles, Lady Diana Frances Spencer, and Camilla Parker Bowles, is as tumultuous as it is heartbreaking, not only for the late Princess of Wales but also for the other two people involved. More than four decades have passed since Charles and Diana got married in what has now become one of the most memorable royal weddings of all time. A few days ago, a piece of their wedding cake was sold at a slashed price of 170 GBP.

Charles and Diana’s wedding remains a topic of intrigue even after so many years, with new revelations coming up time after time, leaving us equally shocked and sometimes, devastated. Now, over 40 years later, royal experts are shedding fresh light on just how emotionally charged that fateful wedding of 1981 really was for the groom, the bride, and the infamous ‘other woman,’ Camilla.

Royal expert says both Charles and Diana wept the night before their wedding

In a new interview with Fox News Digital, royal commentator Ian Pelham Turner revealed that both Charles and Diana cried the night before their grand royal wedding on July 29, 1981. These were not tears of joy but of hopeless resignation. Turner revealed that neither of them truly wanted to go through with the marriage.

Diana Spencer, the beloved Princess of Wales, was only 20 at the time, and she was reluctant to marry the then-prince, Charles. However, her sister allegedly told her it was ‘too late’ to back out, stating that ‘the tea towels with their faces were already printed.’

Charles, meanwhile, was still deeply in love with Camilla, and the cufflinks he wore on his wedding day served as a discreet tribute to her. The cufflinks, reportedly a gift bearing Camilla’s initials, made him visibly emotional, symbolising her presence at the ceremony despite not being by his side. Turner shared:

“Diana was reluctant about marrying Charles, but was told by her sister it was too late. The tea towels with their joint images were already being sold. Charles was given cufflinks with a Camilla insignia, which he wore on his wedding day so that she could be included, which allegedly made him emotional.”

Royal biographer confirms Charles’ emotional state at his wedding to Diana

Claims of the love triangle and the bride and groom’s emotional state at the 1981 wedding, though long whispered, have now been further supported by veteran royal biographer Sally Bedell Smith, who was also present at Charles and Camilla’s coronation in 2023. In a live broadcast during King Charles’ coronation, Smith confirmed that Charles had indeed cried the night before the wedding. She said:

“In covering the king’s coronation [in 2023], I was live on set with Sally Bedell Smith. I asked her about him crying the night before his wedding, which she confirmed.”

Smith explained that Charles was overcome with feelings of pressure and emotional conflict. He felt trapped, torn between royal duty and his long-standing affection for Camilla, whom he considered his soulmate. Royal historian Hilary Fordwich added that as the heir to the British throne, he felt compelled to marry Diana as per royal convention. In Fordwich’s words:

“Then-Prince Charles reportedly told his friends he felt compelled by his father, Prince Philip, to marry Diana not due to deep love, but rather to comply with royal convention.”

Camilla was considered an ‘unsuitable’ partner for the future king

As the next descendant to the throne, royal conventions dictated that Charles marry a virginal, aristocratic woman who fit the mould of a future queen. Camilla, already married and with a complex romantic past, was deemed unsuitable by both the royal family and the Church of England. Fordwich said:

“He had to marry a virginal, suitable bride who would meet public expectations of a future queen. Camilla was regarded as completely ‘unsuitable’ due to her many previous relationships and marital status. Certainly, the Church of England wouldn’t permit the heir to the throne to marry a divorcee.”

Charles and Camilla never stopped loving each other

Charles and Camilla’s love story dates back to 1970, when they first met, and the prince was smitten from the start. However, in 1971, when Charles left to serve in the Navy, he was devastated to find that Camilla had married Andrew Parker Bowles. In 1980, he started courting 19-year-old Diana Spencer, but he never fully got over Camilla, even after she became ‘the other woman’ in the eyes of the public.

After the royal wedding, Charles and Camilla’s physical relationship had supposedly ended, but they never really got over each other. Diana, sensing this, reportedly began to feel jealous, foolish, and betrayed, even before the honeymoon began. Speaking about Diana’s tired eyes on her wedding day, Fordwich revealed:

“On her wedding day, the public mistook Diana’s drawn look for nerves. But she was already deeply aware of Camilla’s presence in Charles’ heart.”

When Charles and Camilla’s affair became public

The emotional burden haunted Diana throughout their marriage, and with time, their rift widened due to differences in age and interests, as well as public roles. Despite their seemingly happy public relationship, the Princess of Wales found herself trapped within the palace walls. Over the years, Charles continued to find emotional support in Camilla, while Diana silently battled isolation and bulimia (an eating disorder).

Then came 1989, the year that Charles and Camilla’s affair, infamously called the ‘Camillagate’ scandal, became public. While Charles’ public image was permanently damaged, Diana’s heartbreak deepened. In her now-legendary 1995 interview with Panorama, Diana confirmed the suspected affair rumours when she famously declared with a sad smirk:

“There were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded.”

Charles and Diana officially divorced in 1996, just a year before her tragic death. Charles and Camilla, after years of public backlash, got married in 2005 and, in 2023, were crowned the King and Queen of England.

Diana’s untimely death still shatters hearts across generations. To her devoted supporters and royal watchers alike, the emotional scars of that doomed marriage and the love triangle remain one of the most painful, haunting chapters in royal history.
