R Madhavan aka Maddy has been winning our hearts for the last few years through his directorial and acting prowess. The actor gifted us with several memorable pieces like The Railway Men, Breathe, Rocketry: The Nambi Effect and Shaitaan. Nowadays, Maddy is charming his audiences with his financial insights and suggestions for today’s youth through his new YouTube channel, For a Change.
R Madhavan recently took to his YouTube channel, For a Change, to candidly chat about his life growing up in a double-income family. The actor-producer recalled that both his parents held regular jobs, allowing for a lifestyle which was a rarity in a '70s Indian household. Madhavan shared:

“I come from a family that was a double income family way back in the 1970s. My mother was working for Bank of India, and my father was working for Tata Steel and almost equal salaries.”
The well-earning stature of his parents allowed Madhavan to enjoy better perks than most children his age, as they could afford better holidays and more frequent flights. However, while they had enough money to spend, Madhavan’s father had some firm discords when it came to spending. Maddy was heard saying:
“There weren’t any defined rules about who should be spending for what. We, of course, had the privilege of being a double income family so the holidays were better, maybe the flights were a little more frequent than the others but I distinctly remember the discord in the family when my father was like ‘I will pay for these things but these other things, I am not going to pay for because I can’t afford it. I have to make sure that I stay in line and I assume I am going to be the single income family household lifestyle for the rest of my life because what you are earning is bonus’.”
Madhavan’s dad had a simple yet practical mantra which he strictly implemented. Being in a household with two earning members, Maddy’s dad had assumed the role of the primary provider of the family, which made his mom the secondary provider. Considering that both his parents earned sufficient amounts each, his father’s income was enough to plan their lifestyle accordingly, making his mother’s earnings an additional advantage, but not something to be relied upon.
While this approach was practical, Madhavan recalled that it sometimes caused friction in the household. Contrary to his dad, Maddy’s mother used to get irritated because she believed that they could use their advantage to live a more luxurious lifestyle. So, there was a constant struggle of opposite perspectives. Madhavan recalled:

“I am sure he had a way of looking at it. I am sure that mother was thinking, ‘When we can afford it, why are we not living now?’ ‘When are we going to live?’ and all those conversations.”
As a dad himself, Madhavan holds a different perspective on parenting. Unlike most star kids who follow in their parents’ footsteps, Maddy’s son, Vedant chose a different career path as a swimmer. Earlier, Madhavan shared in The Ranveer Show that he doesn’t like to compare his son’s accomplishments with other star kids and vice versa.
