Smriti Irani became a household name across India with her iconic role as 'Tulsi Virani' in Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi. The daily soap, which aired in 2000, ran successfully for eight years and changed the face of Indian Television forever. Smriti, who portrayed the lead character on the show, grew with the story as she began by being a daughter and gradually became a wife, mother, mother-in-law and eventually a grandmother. She was loved across the country, and in a recent interview, Ram Kapoor opened up about how Smriti was an example of someone who gained weight and continued to rise and gain success.
Ram Kapoor recently sat down for a conversation with Humans Of Bombay and talked about his stunning weight loss journey where he lost 55 kg of weight which left the netizens surprised. During his conversation, the actor shared that overweight performers like him have to face several challenges in showbiz. But, he praised Smirti Irani for defying these norms and achieving greater success despite gaining weight during shooting for her show, Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi. Sharing his views on Smriti, Ram said:
"She was my size as a woman and probably more successful than I. It is just that she left earlier, and that was Smriti Irani."
Ram Kapoor pointed out how Smirti's appearance changed between the beginning of the show in 2000 to its conclusion in 2008. He shared that the actress explained to him that she gained weight over time because her character aged through several leaps and, towards the end, became a grandmother, so gaining weight suited her character. The actor mentioned that despite gaining weight like he did, they both were extremely successful on TV. In Ram's words:
"When she started Kyunki Saas and when she ended, she was huge. Her logic was, 'Now I have played a character who has taken so many leaps. Now I am playing a grandmother.' So, if you see her from the first year of Kyunki to last year, you will notice that she is as big as I am. We were equally successful."
In the same conversation, Ram Kapoor revealed that he talked to Smirti Irani about her weight gain and admired her for willingly gaining weight. He believes that if the actress had continued to work on TV, she might have gained more weight. However, she joined politics and Smiriti is doing great there as well. However, he emphasised that if a male actor wants to do something like that, it would be difficult, which creates pressure among actors to look a certain way.
Amid everything else, Smirti Irani's fans are delighted as Ekta Kapoor is bringing back Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi season 2 with the actress and Amar Upadhyay in the lead roles. It will air from July 3, 2025, and will be a finite series of 150 episodes. According to some reports, the original show fell 150 episodes short of completing the mark of 2000 episodes, and the relaunch aims to complete it. At the same time, more actors who were a part of the original show, like Hiten Tejwani, Mouni Roy, Karishma Tanna, Gauri Pradhan, and more, would reprise their roles.
