Veteran producer and cinematographer, Prem Sagar, known for carrying forward the legacy of the Sagar family in Indian cinema and television, passed away on August 31, 2025, at 10 a.m. He was 77. His last rites will be performed at Pawan Hans crematorium at 2:30 PM today. Prem was an alumnus of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune, and was part of the 1968 batch. Due to his hard core training in the FTII he created his career base in the photography as well as the cinematography sector.
Prem Sagar played a significant role in Sagar Arts, the family-owned production house. He had worked behind the camera as a cinematographer and also a photographer for a number of movies, and also worked as a producer on many of the prime projects. Well, Sagar Arts has a rich entertainment history and is known to have produced the top TV series, Ramayan, for all audiences back in the late 1980s. It was a show that had become a cultural symbol in the minds of the audience. Prem Sagar ensured that he took ahead the legacy of his father, Ramanand and modernised Indian television.
He did create a visual identity under the banner of Sagar Arts and ensured that the work of his family is always recognised. Prem Sagar's demise has, in a way, marked the end of an era of the Sagar clan, who contributed significantly to the growth of both Indian TV and cinema. For generations, viewers have always remembered the name of the Sagar family, rooted in mythological and culture-centric storytelling.
Prem's death is a big loss to both the film and TV sectors. Friends, family, and his fans have bid him farewell, but his love for storytelling will never end, and his contributions will always be remembered in the Indian entertainment industry. On one hand, Ramananad Sagar's Ramayan made audiences glued to his work; on the other hand, Prem's creative touch to his work made him create masterpieces. He was known to have an artistic eye and was a pro with his technical knowledge.

Prem was known to make every frame worth remembering. He grew up in a house where the environment was filled with movies, storytelling, and his family was fully into devotion. Prem was best known for his camera techniques, production work along with managing the entertainment business. Under his guidance, Sagar Arts created content which was very impactful as the vision was devoted to what Ramanand Sagar thought.
Prem, in the past, had also turned into an author and had chronicled the extraordinary life of his dad, Ramanand. The name of his book was Epic Life: Ramanand Sagar, and it provided fans with a detailed and heartfelt account of the man who was a legend himself. The book was not just about the memories and insights, but also showcased the struggles that Ramananad went through, apart from the resilience he had and the values that shaped his upbringing.

It shows a different and human side of Ramanand, the man who was known to survive the Partition and got himself from scratch and became India's biggest storyteller. Prem Sagar, by writing a book on his father, ensured that future generations understand what a masterpiece his dad created in the form of Ramayan, and the artistic shade of the Sagar family does not cease to stop.
