Rani Mukerji is one of the most talented actresses in Indian cinema. Currently, she is hogging the limelight for her upcoming film, Mardaani 3, the third instalment of the hit Mardaani franchise. Rani is all set to reprise her role as 'Shivani Shivaji Roy' in the action thriller. Coming to her personal life, she is happily married to producer, Aditya Chopra. Now, in a recent interview, she opened up about a personal loss when she got the chance in the film, Mrs. Chatterjee vs Norway.
In a recent interview with Pinkvilla, Rani Mukerji revealed that she got the script of the film, Mrs. Chatterjee vs Norway, during a difficult phase of her life. Rani has always preferred to keep her personal life private. In 2023, she first revealed an unheard facet of her life. For the unversed, in 2020, Rani had a miscarriage. During the recent conversation, Rani also explained why she chose to work on a project like Mrs. Chatterjee vs Norway. She was quoted as saying:
"Wo jo kahani thi wo mujhe bhi aise ek mod pe hua tha, matlab wo film mere paas aayi thi, jab maine mera dusra baccha kho diya tha. Toh yeh sense of loss tha mera bohot aur wo kahani sunke mai itna judd gayi aur maine bola ye kahani mujhe batani hai. Mujhe Hindustan ko yeh kahani batani hai aur unko batana hai ki humara jo obsession hai ki hum bahargaon jayein, hum wahan pe settle karenge, ye sacchai nahi hai, sacchai bohot hatke hai."

During the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne 2023, Rani Mukerji opened up about her miscarriage for the first time. She revealed that after facing a personal tragedy, she was offered a role in the film, Mrs. Chatterjee vs Norway. She mentioned that after the birth of her daughter, Adira, she became pregnant for the second time in 2020, but unfortunately, she had a miscarriage. However, during the film promotion, she remained tight-lipped about an unheard facet of her life. She was quoted as saying:
"Maybe this is the first time I am making this revelation because, in today’s world, every aspect of your life is discussed publicly, and becomes an agenda for talking about your film to get more eyeballs. Obviously, I didn’t speak about this when I was promoting the film because it would have come across as me trying to speak about a personal experience that would propel the film…so, it was around the year when COVID-19 struck. It was 2020. I got pregnant with my second baby at the end of 2020, and I unfortunately lost my baby five months into my pregnancy."

In a 2024 interview with Galatta India, Rani shared that she had been trying for a second baby when Adira was one or one-and-a-half years old. Being in her 40s, Rani mentioned that she can’t have another baby. She then expressed her pain at not giving Adira a sibling. She was quoted as saying:
"Of course, it’s difficult. I tried for a second baby for almost seven years. My daughter is eight years old now, and when she was one or one-and-a-half, I tried for my second, and I kept trying, and I finally got pregnant, and then I lost the baby. I’m going to turn 46, it’s not an age where I can have a baby. It is traumatic for me that I can’t give a sibling to my daughter, and it really pains me. But we have to always be grateful for what we have. For me, Adira is my miracle child, and I’m really happy I have her."
