Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s niece, Sharmin Segal has been receiving a lot of criticism for her performance in the web series, Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar. The actress portrayed the role of 'Alamzeb' and failed to impress the audience with her acting spree. Soon, fans started blaming nepotism for Sharmin's inclusion in the magnum opus and called her performance boring and expressionless.
Now, in an interview with the ETimes, Sharmin Segal defended her performance in Heeramandi and revealed that she took inspiration from late legendary actress, Meena Kumari. She also added that she tried to watch Pakeezah 15 to 16 times before the shoot of Heeramandi. Accepting that it took her a while to get through the film as it was unlike any film she had seen before, Sharmin shared that she tried to inculcate the 'nothingness' of Meena Kumari's performance in her portrayal of 'Alamzeb'.

As always, Sharmin Segal's claims made her a target of trolls, and she got mocked for comparing her acting skills to that of Meena Kumari. A user wrote, "Only person to bring Meena Kumaris anything to life was Richa, by working on her voice and those sad eyes. She matched her voice to Meena Kumari's poetry she said and really studied it. Meena Kumari was magical onscreen, no one can compare." Another commented, "Ye Meena Kumari-ji ke pairon ki dhul khaane ke layak bhi nahi hai. Meena Kumari was sick while shooting Pakeeza and was still so glorious, brought such angst. And this Sharmindgi, with her mama's set, chef's food cannot even move her lip - daffar kahi ki."

During the same, Kapil jokingly asked Sharmin if she had to audition for the web series as Sanjay Leela Bhansali is her uncle. To this, the actress revealed that she desperately wanted to work with the filmmaker, ignoring the fact that he's her 'mamu'.
