Shekhar Kapur is a renowned filmmaker known for his works in both Bollywood and international cinema. In 1983, he made his directorial debut with the cult classic, Masoom. Over the years, he has won numerous accolades, including a BAFTA Award, National Film Award, National Board of Review Award, and three Filmfare Awards. Coming to his personal life, Shekhar was married to Suchitra Krishnamoorti and later got divorced after 8 years of marital bliss. The couple share a daughter named Kaveri Kapur. Now, the veteran filmmaker opened up about dyslexia and how his daughter made him realise the health issue.
On October 11, 2025, Shekhar Kapur took to his Instagram handle and shared that he had dyslexia and how he discovered it. Recalling the moment, Shekhar mentioned that a few years back, his daughter, Kaveri, told him that she had dyslexia. Later she took an online test as a part of her diagnosis and insisted Shekhar as well to take the test. To his utter shock, Shekhar discovered that he is severely dyslexic. He wrote:
"Some years ago, my daughter said she had dyslexia. Her teacher commented that this was often a ruse that students used to get more time for their exams. My daughter insisted on doing an online experiment, and guess what? She was a little Dyslexic, but to my amazement, I was severely Dyslexic. And now it started to make sense for me."
In the same lengthy note, Shekhar revealed that he has always panicked about the paperwork. Although earlier he thought he was being lazy and irresponsible, it was dyslexia that scared him from doing those tasks. He also wondered how he had a successful career as a chartered accountant. He wrote:
"I am petrified of forms, like the ones that you have to fill in on an everyday basis. Always have been. The moment I look at one. I go into a state of panic. And I thought I was just irresponsible and lazy. But how did I become a Chartered Accountant? And a pretty successful one too? It’s still a mystery to me."
In the conclusion, the renowned filmmaker tried to find a connection between creation and dyslexia. Shekhar Kapur tries to find a connection between creation and dyslexia. He shared that during his film shoots, his line producers often joked that even though he never read the schedule, he always completed the shooting on time. Back then, Shekhar used to think maybe it was his quirky style to work. But after he got to know about his health issue, which is dyslexia, he realised the real reason behind it.
It wasn't that he avoided reading the schedule; he genuinely found it hard to understand. With time, he had unknowingly developed his own ways to manage and work around this difficulty. He then added that some of his best creative ideas might have come because of his dyslexia. After finding out how many other creative people also have dyslexia, Shekhar Kapur wondered if there might be a deeper connection between dyslexia and creativity. He wrote:

"Dyslexia in making my films and perhaps some of the great creative moments I have experienced are not in spite of my Dyslexia but because of it! By compensating for it, I am now amazed at the number of brilliant, creative people with dyslexia. Is there a link? I wonder."
