Shreyas Iyer's Ruptured Spleen Injury: How Dangerous Is It, Nature Of Injury, Everything Explained

Team India vice captain, Shreyas Iyer, recently suffered an impact injury to his left rib cage. This was on October 25, 2025, when the third ODI against Australia was played in Sydney. Scans shared that he got an injury in his left rib with a laceration injury to his spleen. Many reports have stated that Shreyas' injury could have been life-threatening because of internal bleeding. Shreyas is in the hospital and is out of danger.

Well, according to a source close to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), a press statement revealed that Shreyas is out of the ICU and will take a few more days before he is discharged from the hospital in Sydney. Scans revealed that Shreyas had a big fall, and now the big fat question is what is a ruptured spleen injury, what does it mean for the health of an athlete, and how long will Shreyas take to kind of come back to his fitness?

What exactly is Shreyas Iyer's ruptured spleen, and how is it dangerous?

For the unversed, the spleen is like a small, tender organ located on the upper left side of the abdomen, and it filters blood. It is situated below the rib cage and also helps the body fight any form of infection and filter out blood cells from the bloodstream. The spleen, according to a report by One India, holds 25 percent of the body's red blood cells and also platelets at one time, and also makes white blood cells to combat infection.

The formation of the spleen is such that it is prone to injury, even though it is surrounded by a small capsule. Hence, Shreyas' simple bruise turned out to be so severe that it led to a laceration of his spleen. An injury to the spleen can tear it apart with internal bleeding. However, Shreyas received immediate medical attention, or else his condition could have worsened. Spleen ruptures happen when a blow to the upper left stomach or upper lower chest takes place, and can also happen during sports injuries. A delayed rupture can also happen when there is swelling due to injury.

What does a spleen do, and what is the severity of the injury in Shreyas Iyer's case?

A splenic laceration is a condition that takes place when there is a fall or someone is hit on the left side of the body. A mild injury can just cause a rupture and in some cases an emergency surgery is also needed as spleen is filled with blood vessels and its nature is delicate. However, in the case of Shreyas, there was no internal bleeding, which in itself was a positive sign, and doctors managed his condition via observation and no surgery.

Why didn't Shreyas Iyer undergo an operation for Spleen injury?

Well, not every spleen injury kind of needs a surgery. Treatment usually depends on how stable the patient is and if the blood pressure and pulse are normal with no signs of blood loss, then doctors opt for non-surgical management. Shreyas was kept under strict observation in the ICU of the Sydney hospital. Scans were conducted on him to see any visible change. The report by One India also stated that if the body heals on its own and the bleeding stops then healing is on its own and so surgery can be avoided at all cost.

Although scans have shown that bleeding is persistent, then doctors can do a procedure which is known as embolisation, where the damaged blood vessels are blocked. In extreme cases, if the injury is too bad, then the spleen is completely removed, and after the surgery, the first two days of recovery are extremely critical.

Shreyas Iyer needs to be away from cricket for three months to recover from a spleen Injury?

Most people are admitted for a week and then discharged and told to recover at home. Healing takes from six to twelve weeks, depending on how serious the condition is. Doctors advice rest from all the physical activity and any movement or impact could reopen the wound. The report by the publication also stated that Shreyas may have to be away from cricket for like three months, post his scans, to totally confirm that he has recovered.

Shreyas, after his scans confirm that he has recovered, can begin with light physical workouts before he comes to the match practice and professional training. A torn spleen can become threatening to the life like in a matter of minutes if there is like some sign of internal bleeding. Timely medical aid makes all the difference.

Shreyas Iyer's spleen injury will heal with proper rest and care

Shreyas has a high fitness level and doctors are totally hopeful that his recovery game will be pretty strong. He will be under medical observation, and scans will take place along with his health checkups to confirm that his bleeding has stopped. Once doctors give clarity, he will be coming back to India and will also take up the rehabilitation program. If things go well, then within a few months, Shreyas could be back on the field and playing cautiously.
