Raja Raghuvanshi, a resident of Indore, was killed by his wife, Sonam Raghuvanshi, during their honeymoon in Meghalaya. It was on June 2, 2025, when Raja's body was found in a deep gorge located near Weisawdong Falls. Sonam and her husband, Raja, went missing when they were on their honeymoon in Meghalaya until it was discovered that an extramarital angle related to Sonam hiring killers to get rid of Raja. Now, a conversation between Sonam with her mom-in-law has gone viral on social media.
According to a report by the Times of India and a video floating online, Raja's mom had called her on May 23, 2025, to check on her. This was because it was Gyaras, a day of fasting. Sonam could be heard telling 'hello' to her 'mummy' and that she has been on a fast and as she is roaming she will not break the same. Sonam had said:
"Mera toh upvas hai na. Meko 2-3 baar boldia. Mei ghumne ke chakkar mei upvas thodi todungi. Ghor jungle hai. Khadi chadhai hai. Utarna aur chadhna khadai hai. Abhi jungle mei kaha kuch milega."
Sonam's mother-in-law told her that she was making Falhari snacks that could be eaten, and then she remembered that her bahu, Sonam, was fasting. She even told Sonam to consume doodh, lassi and told her to tell Raja to carry dry fruits. As heard in the call recording, Sonam was panting and catching up on her breath and was telling her mom-in-law that they had come to see a waterfall. The call ended abruptly as she told her mom that she would speak to her later, and then the call never came.
Vivek Syiem, who is the District Police Chief, stated to Northeast Live and revealed that the weapon discovered by the criminals was revealed to have been obtained, especially for the murder of Raja. Sonam and Raja, on May 23, 2025, had checked out of a homestay located in the Nongriat village after they visited the famous living root bridges there. Their disappearance was noted the next day when their scooter, which was abandoned, was seen near a roadside cafe.
A tattoo of Raja's name was on his body, and that is how his body was discovered. The important evidences discovered from the deceased were broken pieces of a mobile, a smartwatch, medicine strips and a white shirt of a lady. It is suggested that Sonam may have been at the crime scene. Raja's wallet, gold jewellery, and phone were missing, and it gave rise to the suspicion of robbery. Raja's brother has demanded a strict Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry as the remote area did not have CCTV recording.

The recovery operation of Raja's body was affected by the extreme weather in Sohras, which received 500 mm of rainfall in about three days. A search operation with the help of a drone was done to locate Raja's body. There is a Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by SP Herbert Kharkongor, including six officers, that looked at possible motives such as robbery, personal vendetta. The case has given rise to the question of tourist safety in Meghalaya.
